Vietnam, Laos commit to party inspection cooperation

Top Party inspection officials from Vietnam and Laos reaffirmed their commitment to closer collaboration during talks held in Hanoi on June 4.

Tran Cam Tu, head of the Party Central Committee's Inspection Commission and deputy head of the Central Steering Committee for Prevention and Control of Corruption and Negative Phenomena, informed the guest about the socio-economic situation in Vietnam and Party inspection work, with a focus on anti-corruption efforts. He noted that since the beginning of the 13th tenure, the Party Central Committee, its Politburo, Secretariat, and Inspection Commission have issued many critical regulations and guidelines on inspection, supervision, and disciplinary work.

The Inspection Commission has thoroughly dealt with complex and prolonged cases, strictly disciplined Party organizations and members involved in corrupt practices, affirming the Party’s consistent stance against corruption and negativity, he said.

According to Tu, the cooperation agreement between the two Party inspection commissions has contributed to strengthening the friendship, special solidarity and comprehensive cooperation between the Parties, States and people of the two countries.

Khamphan Phommathat, who is head of the Party Central Committee's Inspection Commission and the Central Anti-Corruption Commission of Laos and President of the Lao State Inspection Authority, briefed the host about Laos’ efforts in combating corruption, the handling of public complaints and denunciations, as well as its collaboration with several ASEAN countries in the field.

In the coming time, Laos will intensify inspection work and make public the results of the work to foster public trust, he said.

He also affirmed commitment to continued close collaboration with the Vietnamese side through the exchange of delegations at all levels and training opportunities for Lao officials in Vietnam, cited VNA.

The two sides took the occasion to exchange valuable experiences on Party inspection, supervision, disciplinary actions, and anti-corruption efforts. They reaffirmed their dedication to upholding the cooperation agreement signed for the 2022-2026 period.

Ho Chi Minh City named as world’s fourth-best foodie city

British magazine TimeOut has placed Ho Chi Minh City in the fourth position among its list of the world’s leading 20 cities for food.

Boasting a range of tastes such as sweet, spicy, and fragrant, Vietnamese cuisine never compromises on flavor, meaning that food lovers all over the world can sample the very best of it when visiting Ho Chi Minh, it wrote.

According to the British media outlet, beyond the street side food stalls and bustling markets hawking banh mi, snails, broken rice, and offal stew are a clutch of Bib Gourmand and Michelin-starred restaurants serving up creative versions of classic dishes. However, by far the most mentioned dish in TimeOut’s survey was pho, a type of local noodle soup.

The warming noodle soup in the south is typically heavily garnished with basil, coriander, chili and hoisin sauce, whilst it is a Vietnamese staple that can be found across the city, TimeOut shared.

Though Hanoi might be the birthplace of Vietnamese cuisine and culture, Ho Chi Minh City has emerged as the country's most exciting dining destination, Ho Chi Minh City writer Dan Q Dao said.

Topping the list is Naples with the must-eat dish Pizza margherita, followed by Johannesburg with Kota sandwiches.

Other cities to make the list include Lima in Peru, Beijing in China, Bangkok in Thailand, Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, and Mumbai in India.

Vietnam-Japan festival to delight Da Nang locals, tourists in early July

The Vietnam-Japan festival 2024 will take place at the Bien Dong (East Sea) Park in the central city of Da Nang from July 4 to 7, as part of celebrations to mark 51 years of diplomatic ties between the two countries.

A wide range of activities will be organized within the framework of the festival to increase mutual understanding and cultural exchanges between both sides, according to Le Thu Hanh, deputy director of the Da Nang Department of Foreign Affairs.

An exhibition on Vietnam-Japan cooperation achievements and an exhibition on children's paintings of Japanese localities that have cooperative relations with Da Nang, such as Kanagawa prefecture, Sakai city, Kisarazu city, Mimasaka city, and Mitsuke city, will also be held.

Highlights of the festival will include 80 booths introducing Vietnamese and Japanese cultures; traditional dishes; and information about education, study, tourism, and trade.

A conference on promoting Japanese tourism in Da Nang and an information festival about studying in Japan will also get underway, VOV reported.

Art performance shows put on by Vietnamese and Japanese artists will be held in four nights. Famous Hip Hop band Kawakado from Japan are expected to bring unforgettable memories to audiences.

Notably, a workshop will be held to examine Da Nang-Japan cooperation in fields such as digital technology, green technology, information technology, microchips, semiconductors, and human resources training.

This year’s festival will offer an opportunity for locals and tourists to watch Japanese sports games such as baseball, wrestling and football, along with an exchange of traditional folk dances and an introduction of Japanese tea-making arts.

The festival will jointly be organized by the municipal Department of Foreign Affairs, the Japanese Consulate General in Da Nang, and administrations of Japanese localities.

The festival has been held eight times since it was first launched in 2014. Each year it has attracted more than 35,000 visitors, leaving a positive impression on Vietnamese citizens and Japanese friends.

Severe weather warnings issued for northern region

Most of the region will experience moderate to heavy rain and thunderstorms, with some places experiencing very heavy rain, with rainfall ranging from 40 - 70mm, and some places exceeding 150mm.

The National Centerr for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting (NCHMF) has warned the northern region of Vietnam to prepare for heavy rain and thunderstorms from Tuesday through Wednesday in the northern region

Most of the region will experience rain, sometimes heavy and thunderstorms, with some places experiencing downpours ranging from 40-70mm, and in some places exceeding 150mm.

The thunderstorms could be accompanied by tornadoes, hail and strong gusts of wind, while heavy rain in some localities and widespread heavy rain could potentially cause flash floods on small rivers and streams, landslides on slopes and flooding in low-lying areas.

On Monday, the Standing Office of the National Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control issued document No. 214/VPTT to the command committees for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control and Search and Rescue of the provinces and cities in the northern region, regarding response to heavy rain accompanied by tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong gusts of wind.

They were asked to promptly and regularly inform and guide local authorities and people to proactively prevent and mitigate any potential damage. Authorities should be ready to deploy local forces to support people should emergency situations arise, cited VNS.

Northern provinces and cities should use task forces to inspect and review residential areas along rivers and streams, low-lying areas, and areas at high risk of flooding, flash floods and landslides, clearing any obstacles and be ready to organize the relocation and evacuation of people when dangerous weather events happen.

Local authorities should direct specialized agencies to coordinate with provincial television stations and communication agencies, especially at the grassroots level, to inform and send the message out to local people on how to respond to violent weather in order to minimize damage. Certain reference materials have already been developed and posted by the steering committee on its website.

Additionally, localities should organize continuous monitoring of weather and natural disaster developments and regularly compile reports for the Standing Office of the National Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control.
