Vietnam, Russia look to step up economic-trade, scientific-technological cooperation

Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha and his Russian counterpart Dmitry Chernyshenko co-chaired the 25th meeting of the Vietnam-Russia Intergovernmental Committee on Economic-Trade and Scientific-Technological Cooperation in Moscow on September 11.

In his remarks, Chernyshenko showed his condolences to the Vietnamese Government and people for the damage caused by typhoon Yagi, affirming that the Russian government is willing to support Vietnam during this difficult period.

Vietnam is an important and long-standing partner of Russia, he stressed, expressing his gratitude for the Vietnamese government's close cooperation through the intergovernmental committee mechanism, which has helped promote cooperation between the two countries across fields.

Ha affirmed the Vietnamese Government's determination to continue strengthening and continuously developing the Vietnam-Russia comprehensive strategic partnership, as well as the traditional and close friendship between the two countries and their people, cited VNA.

The meeting concretised the commitments and political will of the two countries' high-ranking leaders over the past time, particularly the outcomes of Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to Vietnam in June 2024 and the phone talks between President Putin and General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee and State President To Lam in August 2024, Ha stated, noting that they contributed significantly to deepening the comprehensive strategic partnership between Vietnam and Russia.

Participants exchanged views on the results of cooperation, proposed solutions to address remaining challenges and obstacles, as well as discussed orientations for future cooperation.

The two sides reaffirmed their desire to strengthen political trust and exchange of all-level delegations, and particularly maintain a hotline between the intergovernmental sub-committees' co-chairs. They agreed to make efforts to increase import-export turnover and promote balanced and sustainable bilateral trade, particularly facilitating access to each other’s markets for agricultural products and pharmaceuticals.

They also agreed on a range of specific measures to further enhance cooperation in various sectors, such as agriculture, industry, energy-oil and gas, information-communications, science-education, culture-sport, tourism cooperation and people-to-people exchange; strengthen the teaching of Vietnamese and Russian languages in both countries, maintain scholarships for Vietnamese students, and attract Russian students to study and conduct research in Vietnam.

The two sides agreed to hold the 26th meeting of the committee in Vietnam in 2025.

As part of the meeting, the Vietnam-Russia Committee on Educational, Scientific and Technological Cooperation convened its fifth session.

The same morning, Ha visited the Moscow Mining Institute under the National University of Science and Technology MISIS.

Vietnam affirms commitment to UN peacekeeping operations

The country backs every effort in helping United Nations peacekeeping operations become more effective and adaptive, said Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the UN at a UN Security Council open debate themed “Strengthening UN Peacekeeping: Reflections for the Future” in New York on September 10.

In his address, the Vietnamese diplomat stated that amid the current complicated geopolitical context, peacekeeping remains an important tool of the UN to maintain international peace and security.

Vietnam supports every effort in helping United Nations peacekeeping operations become more effective and adaptive, with clear and feasible tasks assigned and sufficient resources provided, he said, adding that this process requires close coordination among the UN Security Council, host countries, and nations that send peacekeepers, as well as between the UN and relating regional organizations.

He underlined the necessity to take effective measures for preventing hostilities against peacekeeping forces and facilities, including enhancing interactions and building trust with local administrations and communities, according to VOV.

In addition, UN missions should also further improve their medical capacity to better protect peacekeepers’ physical and mental health, Giang said.

Emphasizing Vietnam’s advocacy of the Women, Peace and Security Agenda, he called for more favorable conditions for women to engage in and contribute to peacekeeping operations, along with for the prevention of all forms of violence as well as security and safety threats coming from gender bias and inequality.

Over the past 10 years, Vietnam has dispatched more than 800 military and police officers, in units and individuals, to peacekeeping operations.

The Vietnamese ambassador once again underscored the country’s strong support for and commitment to UN peacekeeping operations, including the readiness to deploy the first police unit.

At the debate, UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix and participants showed gratitude to UN peacekeeping forces for their contributions and sacrifice. They affirmed the importance of peacekeeping operations in preventing conflicts from recurring and ensuring sustainable peace and security.

They also discussed score measures to promote the efficiency of UN mission models, improving training quality, and ensuring security for peacekeepers, particularly females.

Vietnam, Italy look to boost relations to next level

The relationship between Vietnam - Italy has recorded strong and fruitful development across sectors with a "vibrant vitality" after more than 50 years of establishing diplomatic ties based on the solid foundation of a traditional, sincere and warm friendship, Vietnamese Ambassador to Italy Duong Hai Hung has stated.

Speaking at a ceremony to mark the 79th anniversary of the August Revolution and the National Day of Vietnam (September 2) in Italy on September 10, the diplomat highlighted Vietnam's achievements over the past nearly 80 years, VNA reported.

According to Hung, diplomatic activities, delegation exchanges, and cooperation promotion activities in various fields have been vigorously carried out in Italy, contributing to enhancing mutual understanding and the friendship between the two sides, opening important opportunities for all-around cooperation, especially economic ties.

Notably, SACE and Simest, two of Italy's leading financial institutions, have opened offices in Vietnam, facilitating trade and investment between the two countries. Vietnam Airlines is also implementing plans to establish a direct air route to Italy, which is expected to serve as an important catalyst for further strengthening the economic ties between the two sides.

Alessandra Schiavo, a representative from the Italian government, expressed solidarity with Vietnam regarding the loss of life and property that Vietnamese people are enduring after Typhoon Yagi.

She affirmed that the relationship between the two countries is steadily growing and that there are many opportunities to further expand cooperation in strategic areas such as infrastructure, energy, defense, industry, agriculture, and high technology, alongside economics, culture, and justice cooperation.

The meeting of the Vietnam-Italy Joint Committee for Economic Cooperation is to take place in Hanoi in the coming months, and bilateral political consultations at the deputy ministerial level have also been scheduled, Schiavo said, noting that the friendship and solidarity, which have been hallmarks of the relationship between Italy and Vietnam for more than 50 years, will continue to inspire the bilateral relations in the future.

Italian officials and representatives of the Vietnamese community in the European nation praised the relationship between the two countries in recent times.

Pham Van Hong, Chairman of the Italy-Vietnam Chamber of Commerce, who has lived in Italy for over 40 years, said that businesses and friends in Italy express their desire to join Vietnam's economic development efforts.

Mexican media highlights Vietnam’s resilience in coping with Typhoon Yagi

The Mexican media have given continuous updates about super Typhoon Yagi, which hit Vietnam on September 7, and also highlighted Vietnamese people’s resilience in the face of the strongest storm in the East Sea in more than three decades.

The World News section of Milenio, a major national newspaper in Mexico, on September 10 shared a video about employees striving to hold the doors of a hotel in an effort to prevent downpours and winds.

It also shared social media opinions which hailed the bravery of those hotel employees as well as Vietnamese people amid the adversity, considering such images as highly emotional and inspiring images.

With regard to the Vietnamese Government and people’s extraordinary response and rescue efforts, the Enfoque Noticias newspaper cited statistics as indicating that Vietnam mobilized all forces, including over 500,000 military personnel, for search, rescue, and evacuation of tens of thousands of people to safe places.

While the El Debate newspaper reported on the huge human and property losses caused by Yagi, TV channel FORO shared many clips about the devastation of the strongest typhoon in Vietnam in decades. It also compared this storm with Hurricane Otis that made landfall in Mexico in late 2023 and took a heavy toll along the western coast of this country.

El Economista, a business and economics newspaper, covered Yagi’s impacts on economic activities in Vietnam, especially in some export processing zones in the northern region. However, it also held that production - business activities and supply chains will recover soon.

Japan pledges support for Vietnam following Typhoon Yagi: Deputy Minister

On September 11, in Hanoi, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Pham Thanh Binh hosted a reception for Japanese Ambassador to Vietnam Ito Naoki, who delivered a message of sympathy from Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio to his Vietnamese counterpart Pham Minh Chinh regarding the recent impact of Typhoon Yagi.

In his message, Prime Minister Kishida expressed his profound condolences to the families affected by the typhoon, stressing that the Japanese Government stands shoulder to shoulder with Vietnam during this challenging time. He pledged Japan's readiness to provide assistance, helping Vietnam overcome difficulties and mitigate the aftermath to restore normalcy as soon as possible.

Ambassador Ito revealed that the Japanese Government, through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), is actively considering the provision of materials and equipment to support Vietnam's disaster recovery efforts, tailored to the country's specific needs, WVR reported.

He also confirmed that no Japanese citizens had been affected by the typhoon and expressed his hope that the Vietnamese Government and local authorities would facilitate the swift resumption of Japanese business operations in the country.

Deputy Foreign Minister Binh expressed Vietnam's gratitude for the solidarity and support extended by the Japanese leaders and people, saying that this gesture underscored the close friendship and mutual support between the two nations.

According to him, the Vietnamese ministries, agencies, and local authorities are pooling all available resources to prioritize the treatment of the injured, deploy rescue teams to isolated areas, and ensure the supply of electricity and water for both residents and businesses. The collective effort aims to stabilize the situation and expedite a return to normalcy.
