"New era"
According to the Jakarta Post, US President Joe Biden said that the US-ASEAN Special Summit on May 14 in Washington marked the start of a "new era" in the relationship between the US and ASEAN. .
According to analysts, in the statement after the two-day conference, the two sides took another symbolic step. It is a commitment to elevate the US-ASEAN relationship from a strategic partnership to a "comprehensive strategic partnership" by November.
The Biden administration hopes ASEAN sees that the US remains focused on the Indo-Pacific.
President Biden told ASEAN leaders that "a lot of the history of our world over the next 50 years will be written in the ASEAN countries. Our relationship with you is future, in the years and decades to come".
President Biden called the US-ASEAN partnership "important" and said: "We are entering a new era in the US-ASEAN relationship."
Vice President Kamala Harris said the United States would stay in Southeast Asia "for generations," stressing the need to maintain freedom in waters that the United States says are being challenged by China.
“The United States and ASEAN share a common vision for this region, and together we will defend and prevent threats to international rules and norms,” Harris said.
President Biden on May 13 also announced the nomination of Yohannes Abraham, chief of staff of the National Security Council, as the US ambassador to ASEAN - a position that has been vacant since the administration of former President Donald Trump took office in 2017.
Within the framework of the summit, Washington announced initiatives worth more than US$150 million to strengthen cooperation between the US and ASEAN. That includes a US$40 million investment in clean energy infrastructure, another US$60 million in maritime programs, mainly led by the U.S. Coast Guard, to help build the capacity of Southeast Asian nations to enforce the law of the sea.
Regarding the economy, President Biden is pushing for other initiatives, including an infrastructure investment project and the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF). Two ASEAN countries, Singapore and the Philippines, are expected to be in the initial group negotiating to join the IPEF.
