Vietnam Sends a Sapper Unit to UN Peacekeeping Operations for the First Time
Vietnam’s sapper unit No. 1 and level-2 field hospital No. 4 joining UN peacekeeping operations made their debut at a ceremony held by the Ministry of National Defence in Hanoi on November 17.

The unit was established in 2014 and it takes charge of peacekeeping missions when requested by the United Nations Since 2014.
Major General Hoang Kim Phung, Director of the Vietnam Department of Peacekeeping Operations, said that the preparation for the sapper unit was adjusted regularly to meet the requirements of the UN’s peacekeeping mission. Initially, there were 268 people, then increased to 319 people and now there are 203 people (21 women) in the unit.
Up to now, the level-2 field hospital No. 4 has 71 people who were selected from different units across the whole army.
The hospital focuses on learning English, military-medical, and other training courses organized by the Vietnam Department of Peacekeeping Operations in 2021. The staff of the hospital will participate in additional training courses on medical, peacekeeping, pre-deployment, and military services in the future.
Along with the level-2 field hospital, Vietnam's first sapper unit will contribute to providing humanitarian aid, helping the United Nations Peacekeeping perform their tasks, contributing to peacekeeping and national reconstruction, bringing peace to the host countries, as well as protecting the motherland.

On behalf of the Central Military Commission and the Ministry of National Defense, Senior Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien acknowledged the efforts of agencies and units in the Ministry of National Defense, especially the Vietnam Department of Peacekeeping Operations, Military Hospital 175, Vietnam Military Medical University, and sapper arm in peacekeeping process.
Senior Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien requested relevant units to complete all-around preparations for the sapper unit No. 1 and the level-2 field No. 4 and organize more training courses before deployment.

On this occasion, the US handed over the transient instructor and student accommodation facility S8 to the Vietnam Department of Peacekeeping Operations.
