Speaking on the opening day of the meeting, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said that equal access to Covid-19 vaccine is an urgent human rights issue that have to be guaranteed. This requires governments, pharmaceutical companies, and partners to have a responsibility to support the World Health Organization (WHO) to soon achieve the goal of vaccinating 70% of people worldwide.

The UN Secretary-General also called on countries to enact social policies based on the goal of ensuring rights and opportunities for all. The policies focus on hunger eradication and poverty alleviation, investment in education, protection of the rights of women and children; respond to climate change, environmental pollution and biodiversity loss.

United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet called on the international community to focus on human rights in the Covid-19 pandemic, and other global issues such as environmental pollution and climate change. , increasing poverty and armed conflict.

The meeting will last until March 2, 2022, with the participation of the Heads of State, Prime Ministers, Foreign Ministers of countries and leaders of international organizations.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son is the head of the Vietnamese delegation attending the meeting. He will give an online speech at the session, introducing Vietnam's approach, efforts and achievements in protecting human rights, affirming Vietnam's message when presenting its candidature for membership of UNHRC.

After the Session, the 49th regular session of UNHRC will continue to take place in Geneva, Switzerland until April 1, 2022.

The session is expected to have 8 thematic discussions, review 96 thematic reports, and approve the decision to appoint 11 personnel for Special Procedures. It is also expected to approve 24 resolutions and national reports of 13 countries on the protection of human rights under the Universal Periodic Review, discuss the human rights situation in some countries.
