Born in the season of blooming lotuses in 1890, Ho Chi Minh immersed himself in global political life during 30 years of revolution in the 20th century (1911-1941). He became the first Vietnamese communist; a steadfast and creative Marxist-Leninist theorist; the founder of the Communist Party of Vietnam, who paved the way for national independence and socialism; the leader of a nationwide people's war that defeated colonialism and imperialism; the founder of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam; and a vibrant source of inspiration for Asian, African, and Latin American peoples redrawing the world map after 1945. He was a luminous symbol of peace, friendship, solidarity, and cooperation among nations in the new era, a cultural synthesis of East and West foreshadowing “a culture of the future.”

Ho Chi Minh was one of the revolutionary leaders known to millions worldwide from an early stage. He was admired as “the most humble and thorough Marxist-Leninist of our time” (Fidel Castro); as “the symbol of communist clarity in Asia” (R. Arismendi); as a “great and steadfast leader” (Indira Gandhi); and as the greatest example of “integrity, compassion, and humility” (Salvador Allende)...
As a colonial resident, Ho Chi Minh deeply understood the brutal nature of colonialism and empathized with the suffering of all oppressed peoples worldwide. Regardless of skin color or ethnicity, these were the downtrodden who needed to unite in a common struggle to overthrow colonialism.
With a proletarian internationalist spirit “Workers of the world are brothers”, Ho Chi Minh sharply criticized certain comrades in the Communist International for underestimating the colonial question. He boldly asserted that the proletarian revolution could very well break out first in the colonies, thereby creating favorable conditions for the working class in capitalist metropoles to wage class liberation and social revolution.
The brilliance of Ho Chi Minh’s intellect and revolutionary passion moved renowned Soviet cultural figure Osip Emilyevich Mandelstam to exclaim in 1923: “Through the noble demeanor and warm voice of Nguyen Ai Quoc, we seem to hear the future, a vast tranquility of universal fraternity.”
Upon hearing of the French colonial defeat at Dien Bien Phu on May 7, 1954, British composer Ewan MacColl asked: "Why Vietnam?" And immediately answered himself:
"Because Ho Chi Minh was there." Inspired, he composed the iconic “Song of Ho Chi Minh”, which has since been translated into seven languages and sung by people of many nations during major events, especially international youth and student festivals.
Ewan MacColl inscribed on the music sheet words that immortalized Ho Chi Minh’s timeless stature: “There are things in life that cannot be changed. There are birds that will never be tamed. There are men who live on with time: Ho Chi Minh.”
Ho Chi Minh is a symbol of genuine peace in our time, a peace rooted in national independence, sovereignty, democracy, equality, and social progress. This is the wellspring of Ho Chi Minh’s enduring moral power, and the global relevance of his thought for progressive peoples, as aptly described by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba: Ho Chi Minh belongs to that rare class of individuals whose death has sown the seeds of life and who forever inspire generations to come.
To date, over 20 countries worldwide have erected statues of Ho Chi Minh, with dozens of monuments reflecting diverse architectural styles and his noble character. Hundreds of schools, flower gardens, parks, and boulevards bear his name. A university in Venezuela includes a curriculum on Vietnam and its culture in the Ho Chi Minh era. Saint Petersburg State University in Russia has a department dedicated to Ho Chi Minh studies. “Ho Chi Minh Complete Collection” has been translated into multiple languages at the request of international friends...
According to Vietnam News Agency correspondents, Venezuela’s Deputy Minister of Culture, Alí Alejandro Primera, stated that the Venezuelan government had directed relevant agencies to closely coordinate with the Vietnamese Embassy to finalize preparations for the art program titled “Forever Ho Chi Minh”, scheduled to take place at the Bolivar Theater in Caracas on May 21.
Today, peoples around the world turn to Ho Chi Minh not merely to honor a figure who, as noted by Modagat Ahmed, Director of UNESCO’s Asia-Pacific Bureau, “became a legend even while still alive,” but also for a more profound and urgent reason: to seek direction in addressing global challenges, for peace, justice, freedom, and human happiness.
Romesh Chandra, Chairman of the World Peace Council, explained the vitality of Ho Chi Minh’s thought: “Wherever there is a struggle for independence and freedom, there is Ho Chi Minh and his banner flying high. Wherever there is a struggle for peace and justice, there is Ho Chi Minh and his banner flying high. Wherever people fight for a new world, against hunger and poverty, there is Ho Chi Minh and his banner flying high.”
Yesterday, today, and tomorrow, peoples of the world will continue to praise Ho Chi Minh as a quintessential value representing the era of liberation and development. His thought continues to inspire humanity in the quest for a better world of peace, independence, and the absence of hunger, injustice, and oppression.
Uncle Ho is Vietnam, and Vietnam is the conscience and spirit of our era. Cuban poet Indio Naborí encapsulated it perfectly:
“Uncle Ho!
To praise You
Is to sing the heroic epic of our age
All captured in the two words: VIET NAM!”
