Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son called on United Nations (UN) organisations to step up collaboration with Vietnam in four prioritised areas at a reception for UN Resident Coordinator in Vietnam Pauline Tamesis in Hanoi on April 12, VNA reported.

According to Son, the prioritised areas include mobilising resources to successfully implement the Vietnam-UN Strategic Framework for Sustainable Development Cooperation 2022-2026, which helps accelerate the fulfillment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Vietnam; and providing policy advice and technical assistance to Vietnam during its socio-economic recovery and development.

The UN should support Vietnam in climate change adaptation, energy transition, and green finance, while assisting Vietnamese citizens in applying for positions in the UN system, he stressed.

At the meeting, Son emphasised the role of the UN in coordinating multilateral efforts to respond to the common challenges of the international community such as global economic downturn, climate change, food crisis, water security, strategic competitions among major powers.

He affirmed that Vietnam considers the UN one of its top priority partners and always remembers the valuable cooperation and support of the UN during its development in nearly 50 years.

The minister wished that the Resident Coordinator would serve as an effective bridge between UN organisations and the Vietnamese government, ministries and agencies to further promote bilateral cooperation.

For her part, Pauline Tamesis appreciated Vietnam's active, positive, and effective contributions to multilateralism and UN activities.

She emphasised that despite difficulties and challenges, especially the Covid-19 pandemic, Vietnam has still maintained its strong commitment to realising the SDGs.

UN organisations are committed to continuing to stand side by side with Vietnam to seize new opportunities and respond to challenges, she said, adding that they will help mobilise international resources to serve the country's sustainable and inclusive development.

Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang also hosted a reception for UN Resident Coordinator in Vietnam Pauline Tamesis in Hanoi on April 13.

During the meeting, Quang spoke highly of the central role of the UN in keeping peace and promoting sustainable development in the world, stressing that the role played by the UN becomes even more important in the current international and regional situation.

He thanked the UN for the valuable support and assistance it has provided for Vietnam during the past 45 years, especially the provision of vaccines, equipment and medical supplies for Vietnam during the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic through the COVAX mechanism.

For cooperation in implementing SDGs, the host said the Vietnamese Government will assign specialised agencies to research and sketch out a unified mechanism and specific policies to effectively promote cooperation with the UN, especially projects on sustainable development to 2030.

He called for more support from the UN to help Vietnam respond to climate change, especially in realising the country’s commitment to achieving net zero emissions by 2050.

For her part, Tamesis highly valued Vietnam's active and effective contributions to the UN’s activities; as well as the commitments of the Vietnamese Government at the 26th UN Climate Change Conference (COP26).

Tamesis proposed measures to strengthen collaboration between the UN and Vietnam, especially in promoting the realisation of SDGs in the Southeast Asian nation.

Vietnamese ministries and sectors should work closely with UN agencies in order to make a more comprehensive assessment of all sustainable development target programs that are being implemented in Vietnam, thus speeding up progress and facilitating the addition of resources to these programs, she said.

Tamesis affirmed that the UN will continue to accompany Vietnam so that the country can seize new opportunities, respond to challenges, and mobilize international resources, contributing to implementing its socio-economic development goals.
