Vietnamese Students Score High in Mathematics
The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) announced the results of the 2022 PISA Vietnam survey. These results were evaluated by the OECD from a survey on math, reading and science of 6,068 students in 178 schools, representing about 939,500 15-year-old students in Vietnam.
According to the organization's findings, the average math score of Vietnamese students is 438 points - one of the highest for students with similar socio-economic backgrounds. About 13% of students from disadvantaged backgrounds in Vietnam scored high in this subject.
The average score of all three subjects of Vietnamese students ranked 34/81 countries and territories, math scores ranked 31/81, science scores ranked 35/81, and reading scores ranked 34/81. With these results, Vietnamese students’ performance ranked second only to Singapore in the ASEAN region.
Vietnamese students also have higher math scores than Americans and are in the highest group after Hong Kong, Taiwan (China), and South Korea when calculated according to the PISA index of socio-economic conditions.

The 6 countries with the highest achievements include Singapore, Japan, Republic of Korea, Estonia, Switzerland, and Canada.
The PISA report also found that higher education spending is associated with higher results in PISA math. However, Vietnam is a typical example of students achieving high academic results when investment in education is still modest.
Spending for each Vietnamese student aged 6-15 is only about USD 13,800 (approximately VND 340 million). Meanwhile, other countries and territories spend around USD 75,000, 6 times more than in Vietnam.
According to OECD, 72% of Vietnamese students achieve at least level 2 in math proficiency (OECD average is 69%). About 5% of Vietnamese students have top results in math, equivalent to level 5 or 6 in the PISA math test (OECD average is 9%).
About 77% of students in Vietnam reach reading level 2 or higher (OECD average is 74%). 1% of students scored 5 or above in reading (OECD average is 7%).
About 79% of Vietnamese students achieve level 2 or higher in science subjects (OECD average is 76%). 2% of students achieve level 5 or 6 (OECD average is 7%).
The Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) measures the knowledge and skills of 15-year-old students in math, reading and science. PISA tests explore how well students can solve complex problems, think critically, and communicate effectively.
Vietnam has participated in PISA assessment programs since 2012. This PISA test was originally scheduled to be conducted in 2021 but was delayed by a year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
