The project of new international terminal at Cam Ranh International Airport has total investment capital of VND4,000 billion, to receive 2.5 million passengers per year when completing phase 1 in 2018 and 8 million passengers in 2030.

The Cam Ranh International Airport expansion project officially kicked off the construction on morning Sept 8^th.

By design, the international terminal will shaped bird nests – a symbol of Khanh Hoa province, including 2 floors with covering area of 50,000 square metres.

In phase 1 of the project, the international terminal is designed 10 boarding gate, 4 entrances, 6 gateways to car park and many specialized construction items.

The project with total investment capital of VND4.000 billion, is expected to receive 2.5 million passengers per year when completing phase 1 in 2018. The capacity would increase to 8 million passengers in 2030.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Deputy Minister of Communication and Transport Nguyen Nhat Minh said, the upgrading Cam Ranh International Airport is urgent as the port has become severely overloaded in recent years.

Previously, the number of passengers to Cam Ranh International Airport has increased sharply, especially Chinese travelers. The overload has caused many difficulties, even unwanted mess such as the case of Chinese travelers’ complaints about airport staff.

According to statistics, in 2015, Cam Ranh international airport received total 2.7 million travelers, of which nearly 900 thousand international passengers, exceeding 80% over the design capacity of 1.5 million passengers per year.

In March 2015, Khanh Hoa province also invested over VND1,900 billion to build 2 new runways.

In early 2016, Airport Corporation of Vietnam had carried out renovation, expansion and improvement of the capacity to 2.5 million passengers per year. However, in the first 8 months of 2016, the number of passengers hit 3.3 million, of which 1.5 million international passengers./.
