8 tips for a fashionable mom-to-be
(VNF) - When your belly is growing bigger with your little angel inside, it's time to show the world another aspect of your beauty, that even you, yourself, have never seen before.
There are a few key items that every pregnant woman should own - a printed scarf, great for disguising the bump and useful for discreet feeding afterwards; nice underwear that makes you feel pretty not just functional; good maternity jeans (a few Topshop pairs and one more luxury version should do it) - but what about your personal style?
The women who do maternity dressing well refuse to give up their own aesthetic, and this is a good place to start when searching for your own look for the next few months.
From what to wear, to what to shelve; and from the colours to embrace to the accessories you need, Vogue takes inspiration from your favourite pregnant celebrities to help you glow for the next nine months.
Cover Up
If your usual style revolves around swathing your shape in voluminous wool or jersey, then there's no reason to show off your bump just because everyone in your life is dying to gawp at it. Victoria Beckham wears loose coats and jackets, sends them down her catwalk, and so pregancy was no time to change her fashion tune.
Layer Up
As tends to happen with supermodels, Gisele Bündchen retained her lithe figure when pregnant (practising kung fu and yoga daily until giving birth), so her usual skinny jeans and T-shirts never had to be replaced by maternity wear. Instead she added a denim shirt, checked shirt, or slim leather jacket on top, giving the impression of a more put-together look that retained maximum comfort.
The weather and your body temperature will vary during your pregnancy. You'll probably feel increasingly warm as the months pass, so dressing in layers will help keep you comfortable. And if you wear your regular cardigans, blazers, and denim jacket unbuttoned, you'll only need to buy inexpensive maternity or stretchy tank tops and T-shirts to wear underneath.
Loosen up:
There's a reason why so many women (pregnant or not) reach for A-line or empire-waist shirts and dresses: they flow away from the tummy. This cute and comfortable style has a seam right under the bust so that there's plenty of room for an expanding midsection. It's an economical choice because one piece may fit you for most of your pregnancy. Hold onto A-line tops and dresses after giving birth because you'll probably still wear them while you're carrying some baby weight.
You can try the style of Natalie Portman, an empire-waist dress, which embraces your shape in an elegant and comfortable way.
Business as casual
Dressing for work is one of the biggest challenges for many pregnant women and, short of working from the sofa for nine months, also one of the biggest necessities. Like everything Amal Clooney does, this outfit is effortless - but there are a few lessons we can learn here. Choose a colour that suits you, a loose coat or jacket, and for goodness sake don't forget shoes that make you smile.
Accessorise
While she was expecting, Anne Hathaway embraced a rule that works for many pregnant women: wear what you're confident in and accessorise. In this case, the Hollywood star opted for a glamourous long gown, with glittering bead.
She also put on a pair of long earrings, which add more charm to the dress.
For yourself, you can put on whatever accessories you love (just make sure they go well with the costume): sunglasses, necklace, hair pin, head band, etc.
T-shirt and Jeans (or legging)
When it comes to maternity tops and shirts, it’s worth investing in a few on-trend statement styles as well as a collection of classic designs. Comfortable T-shirts and cotton button-ups are ideal for simple casual looks. In particular, off-the-shoulder styles and designs with horizontal stripes will show off your bump in a chic way. A denim shirt is also a great basic option that is easy to wear with either jeans or leggings.
Pregnancy calls for comfortable clothes, but it can also be a great time to play up your feminine side. Many women like to wear ruffles, florals, and girlie colors and touches to complement their pregnancy glow (like Claudia Schiffer in this picture). Choose shirts with longer hemlines in the front to cover your expanding belly and with room on top for your shoulders and growing bust.
You can also try horizontal stripes. The idea may seems like madness, when most dressing tips aim to elongate your shape, but pregnancy is the one time you will be happy to accept you're getting wider. A simple blue jeans and cute cardigan could be replaced by colourful trousers and a biker jacket for the same effect - just don't forget the nonchalant grin.
Tips to wear jeans:Belly Band
You've surely heard of this fashion lifesaver for pregnant women: the belly band. It's a stretchy fabric band that overlaps the top of your unzipped or low-slung jeans, pants, and skirts and holds them up while leaving room for your growing belly. Genius!

Beyond Maternity Stores
There are a lot of great maternity clothes stores, but don't limit yourself to just those. A lot of major retailers, like Gap, Old Navy, Kohl's, and Ann Taylor, now offer maternity lines. Plus, check out local boutiques and online stores that carry maternity clothes. You can find almost anything under the sun – from stylish bathing suits to wider-leg boots – if you look in the right places.
A Little Help from Friends
When you find out you're pregnant, ask friends who have recently had a baby to hang on to their maternity clothes so that you can borrow them. Most women would be glad to give their old maternity wardrobe a new home, especially if they're done having kids. You could even share and swap maternity clothes with a friend who is also pregnant. As a new mom, you'll quickly become a fan of receiving and exchanging hand-me-downs./.
