Dutch Urban Greening Firms Hope to Partner with HCM City

Ho Chi Minh City highly values the Netherland’s capacity and experience in climate change adaptation, water management and sustainable agriculture.

Dutch firms specialising in building green infrastructure and urban projects, are hoping to partner with Ho Chi Minh City, said Vice Minister for Foreign Economic Relations of the Netherlands Hanneke Schuiling during a meeting with Vice Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee Vo Van Hoan on April 26, reported VNA.

Hoan expressed his delight as the relations between Vietnam and the Netherlands have been thriving since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1973, especially after the countries set up the strategic partnership on climate change adaptation and water management in 2010, signed an agreement on strategic partnership on sustainable agriculture and food safety in April 2014.

The Netherlands is currently the fifth largest investor of HCM City with 161 projects valuing at nearly USD 5 billion.

The city is facing some issues in its development such as urban transport, waste management and environmental pollution, hoping to connect with Dutch scientists and businesses so as to find solutions to climate change, flooding and sea level rise, he added.

The southern hub of Vietnam has yet to fully tap the potential of its seaports and welcomes authorities of Rotterdam to inspect and promote investment cooperation between the two cities, notably in the construction and development of a port system.

For her part, Vice Minister Schuiling congratulated HCM City on overcoming difficulties caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and rolling out economic recovery measures.

Dutch businesses operating in the city highly valued cooperation potential between the Netherlands and Vietnam in general and HCM City in particular, she underlined, especially in climate change adaptation and agricultural production.

In regards to cooperation between Dutch localities and HCM City, she said the Mayor of Rotterdam has paid due attention to and wanted to visit the Vietnamese southern largest economic hub to step up cooperation in developing seaports and responding to climate change.

The Netherlands is home to numerous firms specialising in building green infrastructure and urban projects, and they are hoping to partner with HCM City in the fields of mutual concern and development potential, Vice Minister Schuiling underlined.

Vice Minister Schuiling on April 25 had a meeting with Vietnam’s Vice Minister of Industry and Trade Dang Hoang An to discuss the bilateral trade and investment agenda and the implementation of the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA).

On the same day, Vice Minister Schuiling also had a meeting with Vietnam’s Vice Minister of Planning and Investment Tran Quoc Phuong.

The Dutch Vice Minister congratulated MPI on the approval of the Mekong Delta Integrated Regional Masterplan, the first of its kind in Vietnam. The Netherlands has invested Euro 50 million both private and public funded projects in the Mekong Delta, and there is room for a considerable increase in climate funding for Vietnam.

The success of the Mekong Delta Business Forum in Can Tho in early April proved the strong presence of the Netherlands in the Mekong Delta and the leading role for the green transformation of the business sector. Both governments therefore should facilitate and enable a good business climate.

In addition, the Dutch Vice Minister offered the Netherlands’ supports for the modernization of Vietnam’s procurement laws, in terms of funding and technical advises.

Vice Minister Schuiling brought to her counterpart’s attention a scoping study that the Netherlands is currently conducting to develop Agro Business Hubs in the Mekong Delta. The Netherlands is eager to work with Vietnam and the Worldbank on the development of Agro Business Hubs.

As part of the visit, Vice Minister Schuilling met with up to 100 Dutch and Vietnamese female entrepreneurs in an inspiration session on women entrepreneurship.

She emphasised the Netherlands’ commitment to join hands with Vietnam in creating the next steps to make Equal and Quality Participation of Women become the New Business As Usual.

In Hai Phong, together with Vice Chairman of Hai Phong People’s Committee Hoang Minh Cuong, the Vice Minister attended the delivery ceremony of Tan Cang 99 tugboat.

After the launch of SPARKY, the world’s first fully electric tugboat for the Port of Auckland, Tan Cang 99 is the first commercial vessel of Damen Song Cam for a Vietnamese client, Tan Cang Northern Marine.

In her visit to VinFast manufacturing plant in Hai Phong city, the Vice Minister met with the VinFast management team.

She applauded VinFast’s plan to open showrooms for its new fully electric vehicles in the Netherlands and highlighted that the Dutch Government is pleased to give its full support to VinFast’s operations in the country.
