Rana Flowers and UNICEF have supported the efforts of Ministry of Education and Training in ensuring the continuity of learning for every child in Vietnam during Covid-19; enhancing capacity of teachers in building climate-resilient schools; implementing digital initiatives that uplifted the Vietnam's digital transformation not only within the East Asia Pacific region, amongst ASEAN countries, but also at global level.
Minister of Education Nguyen Kim Son on July 1 presented the medal "For the Cause of Education" to Representative of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in Vietnam Rana Flowers, for her tireless efforts over the past six years in improving quality education for all children in Vietnam.

Speaking at the medal awarding ceremony, Minister Nguyen Kim Son said that during Rana Flowers' tenure as UNICEF Vietnam Representative, she witnessed the most difficult period of the education system worldwide, included Vietnam. During this period, Vietnam received a lot of effective support from UNICEF Vietnam, under her close leadership, as well as support to ensure uninterrupted education for children.
They supported Vietnam building school safety standards, monitoring and supporting several educational faculties; mobilizing resources, organizing online teaching training for teachers, diversing digital learning resources and digital platforms, and other initiatives that have actively supported educational sector.
In addition, the UNICEF Vietnam Representative also assisted the Ministry of Education and Training in educational cooperation with the region and internationally such as supporting the ministry to successfully chair ASEAN education channel; co-chairing the National-level Consultation Meeting in preparation for the Transforming Education Summit (TES) and help the ministry to develop a national commitment on education transformation at this summit.
Flowers's efforts are also shown in promoting quality, transferable skills, and equity in education for disadvantaged children, especially children with disabilities and ethnic minority children; improving mental health, gender and difference integration for students and teachers; minimizing the impact of climate change on children; promoting digital education and educational finance, among others.
Son wished Flowers success in the new period, continuing to care and support education and children in Vietnam and education and children around the world.
Emotionally receiving the medal, Flowers thanked the Vietnamese ministry for the support and companionship with her and UNICEF during the past time. She stressed that this is her honor and also shows the increasingly tighter cooperation between the organization and the ministry.
Recalling her time working in Vietnam and the achievements in bringing equal access to education to Vietnamese children, Flowers expressed her belief that there will be more and more cooperative activities between UNICEF and the Ministry of Education and Training of Vietnam, thereby helping more children.
"Education is always in our hearts and every step we take," Flowers said, adding that she will apply the experiences and results of cooperation in Vietnam to the country where she will take up her assignment. After Vietnam, with the hope of seeing more achievements in education and children.
Rana Flowers is the UNICEF Representative in Vietnam since May 2019. Prior to this appointment, she served as UNICEF Representative in China, Cambodia, Mongolia and Belize, bringing more than 25 years of experience in international development. She came to UNICEF with over 10 years of experience working on child development and policy advocacy in her home country, Australia, and she also worked in the United Kingdom in the same field.
