Phu An Village is a project for the ecological conservation of bamboo genetic resources and vegetation along the Saigon River of Binh Duong province and the Southeastern region. This project was formed from the scientific idea of Dr. Diep Thi My Hanh, lecturer at the University of Natural Sciences under Vietnam National University-Ho Chi Minh City since 1999. After more than 20 years, Phu An Bamboo Village has become an ideal destination, contributing to educating the love of nature and protecting the ecological environment to the young generation.
This pioneering project has brought tangible economic rewards to the Phu An community, whose members are trained in the production of artisanal bamboo handicrafts. A total of 3,000 families have benefitted from the village, and out-migration from the area to the urban center has reduced significantly.

The village is divided into two separate areas, including the bamboo museum and the research area. Currently, it has about 1,500 bamboo bushes with more than 300 forms of bamboo belonging to 17 varieties, accounting for nearly 90% of bamboo varieties in Vietnam.
Therefore, this place is also directly supporting scientists and student groups to carry out research and conservation of bamboo genetic resources and vegetation systems along the Saigon River. It is currently an ideal destination for an ecological garden model.

Bambo is also used widely in Vietnamese daily life. The tree's body is often treated as a valuable material to build houses and make household equipment such as tables, chairs, bookshelves, or agricultural tools such as shovels, hoes, or plows. It has also become a material for interior decorations such as lamps, plates, chopsticks, and other souvenirs. During times of war, bamboo was used to make obstacles and traps for the invading forces. In addition, the bamboo tree has nutritional value as bamboo shoots are commonly found in Vietnamese kitchens. Additionally, the bamboo tree is a significant symbol in Vietnamese culture. It exists almost everywhere in Vietnam, though mainly in rural areas. The solid, straight, and high bamboo trees represent the resilience, indomitable, and bravery of the Vietnamese people. Also, as the bamboo trees often grow in clusters with a strong vitality, it represents the solidarity of Vietnamese people as well as their diligence and loyalty to their homeland. Bamboo tree clusters are also popularly known as the emblem of Vietnam's rural areas, together with banyan trees, rice paddy fields, or village ponds. These symbols always recall a peaceful, rustic village in the mind of Vietnamese wherever they are. |
