Deputy Director of the Quang Tri Provincial Department of Foreign Affairs and President of the Quang Tri Union of Friendship Associations Tran Khanh Khoi delivered a speech to summarize the career of the Cuban leader. Following is the excerpt from the speech:

“‘Cuba is willing to devote blood for Vietnam’ was what Fidel Castro said during his historic visit to the Tan Lam military base in Quang Tri, one of the American army’s major bases before liberation. The appearance of the first and only leader of a foreign country in Quang Tri at the time became a symbol of the great solidarity between Vietnam and Cuba.

“In the heart of the Vietnamese people, Cuba and Fidel Castro have become symbols of revolutionary heroism, undaunted spirit and the desire for freedom and happiness. The image of Fidel Castro, standing tall in Tan Lam in an olive-green outfit with a cap and a pair of high ankle boots and surrounded by revolutionary soldiers, left a deep impression on the world. The Cuban leader’s visit was a headline-grabbing event of political significance to the friendship between the two countries.”

The delegates offered flowers and held a minute of silence to pay tribute to the Cuban leader and great friend of Vietnam.

Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz was born on Aug. 13, 1926, in Biran, a town in the eastern province of Holguin. Castro's reputation was tied to the fate of the country and the life of the Cuban people. On Jan. 1, 1959, the revolution under the leadership of Fidel Castro achieved great success. Guided by the Cuban Communist Party with Castro as leader, Cuba has been making continued accomplishments since 1959.

Fidel Castro was the first and only foreign leader to set foot in the liberated area in the south of Vietnam in September 1973, where he famously said: “Cuba is willing to devote blood for Vietnam.”

The appearance of Castro despite dangers in Quang Tri was a major source of encouragement for the liberation soldiers in southern Vietnam and for the Vietnamese people in the war against American invaders.

The Consul General of Cuba to Vietnam Indira Lopez Arguelles could not attend the event due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. In place of her physical appearance, Indira sent an essay expressing her thoughts and feelings about the Cuban leader and Vietnam’s sentiments for Castro.
