After laying wreaths and paying tribute to President Ho Chi Minh, Former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet offered incense and flowers in memory of Vietnam's first president.

Former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet on March 28 laid wreaths and paid tribute to President Ho Chi Minh at his hometown.

On the occasion of the 52nd anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Chile (March 25, 1971-2023), the Chilean delegation led by former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet visited the Kim Lien Relic Site in President Ho Chi Minh’s hometown of Nam Dan district of the central province of Nghe An to lay wreaths and pay tribute to the late President on March 28.

Accompanied her were Sergio Narea, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Chile in Vietnam; Pham Truong Giang, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Vietnam in Chile; Mauro Elias Tamayo - Municipal President of Cerro Navia.

On the side of Nghe An province, there were Bui Dinh Long, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee and leaders of the Provincial Department of Foreign Affairs.

The delegation expressed respect to the late President Ho Chi Minh - the great leader of the Vietnamese people. He has devoted his life to the cause of national liberation of the Vietnamese people, striven tirelessly for peace and progress in the world.

President Ho Chi Minh was honored by UNESCO as a national liberation hero and outstanding cultural celebrity.

During the working day in Nghe An, former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet visited Nghe An Museum, VSIP Industrial Park, WHA Industrial Zone 1 to promote cooperation between localities and people-to-people exchange activities between the two countries.

Previous, the former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet was received by President Vo Van Thuong, and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son, and attended a commemorative ceremony organized by the Viet Nam Union of Friendship Organizations (VUFO) in Hanoi.

At Son’s invitation, Bachelet is in Vietnam from March 25 to April 3 for the celebration of the 52nd anniversary of the nations’ diplomatic relations.

Over the past 52 years, the two sides have recorded many important cooperation achievements, including establishing the Comprehensive Partnership in 2007, signing the Bilateral Free Trade Agreement in 2011, initiating cooperation mechanisms, and together joining the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) in 2018. The two countries have regularly conducted many visits to build up trust and deepen the bilateral relations.

Two-way trade between Vietnam and Chile has grown considerably, reaching USD 2.15 billion in 2022 alone, up 9% year on year. Cooperation agreements in various fields have been effectively implemented, bringing about practical benefits for the two countries.

During her two presidential terms (2006-1010 and 2014-2018), Michelle Bachelet officially visited and attended APEC Meetings in Vietnam in 2006 and 2017, during which, she signed many agreements to further promote multi-faceted cooperation between the two countries.

During her first visit in 2006, she had a chance to meet with General Vo Nguyen Giap and was given two books by him. One book has been translated into Spanish titled “Unforgettable Years” and the second book printed in Vietnamese, titled “Ho Chi Minh Thought and the Revolutionary Road”.

During her second visit, Bachelet went to lay a wreath at the Monument of Heroes and Martyrs, and visited Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and his stilt house.
