The figures were compiled for the period from January to March 2024, showing a significant change in travel preferences for Indian tourists.

"We are seeing more international trips by Indian tourists than at any time in history. India is now among the fastest-growing major markets in the world and for the foreseeable future, this is likely to be a (growth) story. Demand for travel, jewelry, and high-end clothing will remain very strong as disposable income and aspirational lifestyle grow," David Mann, Chief economist for Asia-Pacific at Mastercard, claimed.

In the first quarter of this year, Indian airports recorded a record 97 million movements for both domestic and international air traffic. This marks a significant increase from a decade ago when achieving such a number would take a whole year.

In particular, Indian travelers extended their trips by one day in the fiscal year expected to end in March, compared to the same period in 2019. This trend emphasizes the growing demand for rich and meaningful travel experiences. Furthermore, cruise holidays have seen tremendous growth, surpassing 2019's highs.

Despite a stronger dollar, India's outbound travel segment is doing well thanks to an expanding base of affluent consumers looking for luxury experiences. According to the report, evolving spending patterns reflect the nation's growing disposable income and aspirational lifestyles.

Mann added that an analysis of Indian tourist arrivals data to popular destinations showed that Vietnam, which recently added direct flights, has seen Indian tourist arrivals increase 2.5 times compared to 2019.
