The past two years have shown that, as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, Vietnam's contributions to solving regional and international issues have been appreciated by the international community.

Active, skillful, effective

Assessing Vietnam's contributions in the past two years, UN Secretary-General António Guterres once said that Vietnam, as the chair of the Security Council, had shown its role as a bridge in supporting dispute resolution, and creating an atmosphere of peace between the major powers.

Guterres also appreciated Vietnam for proposing to promote cooperation between the UN and Southeast Asian countries to a new height, further strengthening the spirit of multilateralism.

In June 2021, Guterres recognized Vietnam's active and responsible contributions to the United Nations in global affairs, especially at the Security Council, the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, response to climate change and Covid-19.

The UN Secretary-General affirmed that Vietnam is an important factor contributing to peace and stability in the region.

Ambassador Anouprb Vongnorkeo, permanent representative of the Lao PDR to the United Nations, said that Vietnam played an increasingly important role in the UN, especially in the Security Council.

Ambassador Philippe Kridelka, permanent representative of Belgium to the United Nations, said: "Vietnam has a strong voice and has won the trust of the world, especially in Asia, Africa, Europe and the US."

Ambassador Barbara Woodward, UK Permanent Representative to the United Nations, said that Vietnam was directly involved in solving many important issues, such as the role of women in peace and security, protecting civilians in conflict or dealing with landmines.

These issues are important for world peace and security. Therefore, Vietnam's contributions are valuable.

Strengthening the link between the UN and ASEAN

Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana, executive secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, highlighted Vietnam's contributions to the dual role of ASEAN Chair 2020 and a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council this term, contributing to promoting the comprehensive partnership between ASEAN and the United Nations.

Ambassador Dian Triansyah Djani, permanent representative of Indonesia to the United Nations, said that Vietnam had made a significant contribution to enhancing ASEAN's voice and image at the Security Council.

Permanent Representative of the Philippines to the United Nations, Ambassador Enrique A. Manalo, said that by putting ASEAN on the agenda of the Security Council, Vietnam had helped raise the image of ASEAN to a new level, raising the level of relations of regional organizations with the UN, especially the Security Council.

Ambassador Nathalie Estival-Broadhurst, deputy permanent representative of France to the UN, said that Vietnam had been successful in connecting ASEAN and the Security Council.

In general, international opinion is that Vietnam has successfully completed its role as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2020-2021 term.

It has left a strong mark and message about Vietnam, a responsible and active member in the international community, which always wishes to contribute to the work of the United Nations.

The country always ensures it is abiding by the UN Charter and international law as well ss promoting multilateralism and the central role of the United Nations in maintaining international peace, security and development in the world.

With the completion of the second term as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council 2020-2021, Vietnam has met the expectations of international friends.

Vietnam's success in this term contributes to further enhancing the image and position of the country in the eyes of international friends.
