IOM Appreciates Vietnam's Efforts in Implementing Migration Compact
Overview of the conference. |
Vietnam achieves positive results
The conference aims to review the implementation of the GCM implementation plan according to Decision No. 402/QD-TTg dated March 20, 2020 of the Prime Minister, and discuss solutions to improve the effectiveness of implementing the compact in the coming time.
Speaking at the opening of the conference, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Do Hung Viet said that the conference was held at a suitable time.
Previously, December 10 was the anniversary of the World Declaration of Human Rights, which affirmed the right to freedom of movement of people.
December 18 is International Migrants' Day with the theme "Action today, everyone can contribute to creating solutions."
The Deputy Minister affirmed that international migration has always been an inseparable part of the world's economic, political, and social life and is rapidly increasing in number.
According to United Nations forecasts, there will be about 405 million international migrants by 2050, accounting for 7% of the global population.
With the adoption of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM) in December 2018, countries agreed to recognize migration as a source of prosperity, innovation and sustainable development in a globalized world.
International migration, if managed effectively, will be a factor promoting sustainable development, contributing to the socio-economic development of each country, each locality, community and migrant.
Evaluating the results of GCM implementation in the past year, Deputy Minister Do Hung Viet commented that ministries, agencies and localities made efforts, implemented the plan, and achieved many positive results.
The Deputy Minister proposed that the conference discuss measures to further strengthen legal and safe migration channels for people, prevent illegal migration and cross-border human trafficking activities, protect migrants from the trap of unsafe migration, reduce vulnerability, and protect their legitimate rights and interests.
Park Mi-Hyung, head of the delegation of the International Organization for Migration in Vietnam, spoke at the conference. |
Vietnam looks forward to a greener, sustainable future
Park Mi-Hyung, head of the delegation of the International Organization for Migration in Vietnam, said that the number of international migrants is increasing, the crime of human trafficking for coercion to commit crimes is complicated in the area.
Therefore, comprehensive dialogue and cooperation on international migration has become more urgent and important than ever.
Park Mi-Hyung appreciated Vietnam's efforts in implementing GCM recently to promote legal, safe and orderly migration.
She hoped that the conference would continue to review and update implementation results, and identify priority issues to improve the effectiveness of the compact.
Park Mi-Hyung said that Vietnam is one of the most vulnerable countries due to the negative impacts of climate change.
This is one of the most pressing global issues today, forcing many people to leave their homes and families due to unsafe living conditions or unsustainable livelihoods.
However, the Vietnamese Government has taken proactive steps towards a greener, more sustainable future.

Building a national database on migration
Delegates attending the conference also heard sharing from representatives of ministries and localities about outstanding results in implementing the GCM in many fields.
These include the work of sending Vietnamese workers to work abroad under contracts, the issuance of civil status and documents to migrants, efforts to improve their health, and prevention and combat of human trafficking.
Delegates also discussed several issues that Vietnam needs to pay attention to promoting in the coming time (building a national database on migration, improving the capacity of officials working on international migration, and setting up addresses to support Vietnamese workers abroad).
This is to comprehensively and effectively implement the tasks, creating a safe and fair migration environment, and protecting the legitimate rights and interests of migrants.
