Israel, Mekong River Nations Cooperate in Water Resources Management

The signing ceremony, held virtually on Sept. 9, saw the participation of CEO, Dr. An Pich Hatda who represented the MRC Secretariat, and Israeli Ambassador to Vietnam Nadav Eshcar.
According to the Embassy of Israel in Vietnam, the memorandum offers a cooperation framework in training, consultancy and exchange of professional knowledge, mainly in drought management.
The document will be active right after the signing.
Relations between the Mekong region and Israel have seen big strides over the past years. Israel has shared its experience and knowledge with foreign countries in different spheres, while working to seek necessary solutions to help the Mekong region deal with challenges.

In his remarks, Nadav Eshcar said global climate change, the construction of large dams and water overuse had depleted water resources, causing pollution and seriously impacting the Mekong River.
With its decades-long experince, Israel wants to contribute to efforts of the MRC and its member countries, helping them benefit from the river and preserve its resources for next generations, he said.
Israel is the world’s leading country in smart agriculture and water management, which has introduced many solutions to drought.
The Israeli Agency for International Development Cooperation have shared its experience, knowledge and technologies with developing countries since 1957.

The MRC is an intergovernmental organisation for regional dialogue and cooperation in the Lower Mekong River Basin. It was established in 1995 based on the Mekong Agreement between Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam.
The organisation serves as a regional platform for water diplomacy and a knowledge hub of water resources management for the sustainable development of the region.
It is set to promote and coordinate sustainable management and development of water and related resources for the countries’ mutual benefit and the people’s well-being.
In recent years, Mekong River nations have engaged in cooperation in the fields of water resources, ecological environment, disaster management and climate change response, with attention paid to preventing and handling the impact of droughts.
