According to Hoang Nam, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Quang Tri province, Quang Tri is one of the provinces that endured the most severe impacts of the war, with the greatest amount of bomb and mine contamination in the country. Immediately after the war ended, Quang Tri began removing bombs and mines to relocate people, stabilize production, and promote socioeconomic development. However, because of limited resources and primitive methods, only bombs, mines, and explosives dispersed on topsoil in high-priority regions can be recovered. During that time, Quang Tri recorded more than 100 landmine victims per year.

In 1996, Quang Tri became the first province in the country to be given permission by the Vietnamese government to establish cooperation projects with organizations aimed at resolving the consequences of post-war bombing and mining. In 1999, MAG came to Vietnam and started collaborating with Quang Tri province to carry out a variety of critical operations, including non-technical surveys, mine prevention education, mobile bomb and mine disposal, clearing of bombs and mines in former war zones, and local contact points.

Over the past 25 years, MAG Vietnam has conducted 72 non-technical surveys to identify mine-contaminated regions; and discovered and safely disposed of 390,000 explosive objects, including bombs, bullets, and mines. Over 2,500 mine avoidance education workshops were organized, and eight social media campaigns informed over one million people about how to avoid landmines.

Thanks to MAG's efforts, 250 km2 of land in Vietnam has been cleared of mines and bombs, allowing people to build and farm with confidence; 1.1 million people in Quang Tri, Quang Binh, and Quang Nam provinces now live in mine-free areas, ensuring a safe environment for construction and development.

According to Hoang Nam, MAG is currently one of Quang Tri province's main partners in its efforts to overcome the consequences of landmines, as well as an essential partner in Vietnam's National Mine Action Program. Together with other organizations, MAG has made a significant contribution to reducing landmine accidents in Quang Tri province and providing clean and safe land for locals.

"I acknowledge the passionate dedication of MAG's leaders and employees over time and the personal leadership role of National Director of MAG Vietnam Sarah Goring and the management staff of MAG organization in implementing an effective cooperation program in Quang Tri," said Hoang Nam.

At the ceremony, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Hoang Nam presented MAG with a Certificate of Merit from the Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee in recognition of its efforts in supporting Quang Tri province in overcoming the effects of post-war bombing and mining.

In addition, MAG received a Certificate of Merit from representatives of the Viet Nam Union of Friendship Organizations for its significant contributions to socio-economic development in Vietnam from 1999 to 2024.
