Netherlands – Vietnam Sustainable Business Event for the Mekong Delta

The Netherlands Embassy and Consulate General in Vietnam organized the Vietnam Sustainable Business Event for the Mekong Delta on January 25, where distinctive projects and collaboration in agriculture, water, and circular economy are celebrated.

As a concluding event of the Mekong Delta Mission and to honor the bilateral collaboration and partnership between the two countries in agriculture, water, and circular economy sectors; the Netherlands – Vietnam Sustainable Business Event for the Mekong Delta started with the singing of Letter of Intent on the Establishment of the Netherlands – Vietnam Business Platform for the Mekong Delta between the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality together with the joint Top Sector Water, Logistics, Agro Food, Horticulture & Starting Materials (Top Sector) and the VCCI Can Tho.

The Platform is established to not only stimulate the business development in the Mekong Delta – with focus on sustainable water management, agro-water technology, and logistics; but also to identify business opportunities through public private partnership approach by 2030.

Another highlight of the event is the Sustainable Citrus Chain Empowering and Developing Smallholders in the Mekong Delta (SUCCEEDS) signed between The Fruit Republic, Can Tho University and Ben Luc District from Long An Province. With USD 2 million invested from the Dutch government and another USD 2 million from the Dutch private sector, the project aims to make the citrus sector of the Mekong Delta more sustainable and efficient and more profitable for 150,000 citrus small-holders in the area.

Alongside, there are also project launchings and project introductions such as Quality Improvement Tropical Fruit Vietnam; Orange Knowledge Program: Towards a Climate Resilient Nursery Sector and Value Chain in the Mekong Delta; River Training and Management in the Mekong Delta; Water Retention in the Mekong Delta; Cai Mep Ha Logistics Center & Downstream Cai Mep Ha Port.

The event also honors five project winners of the Agro-Water Solutions for the Mekong Delta Contest; where Dutch and Vietnamese knowledge institutes and businesses work together for break-through solutions addressing the challenges in the Mekong Delta. As the next step, the project proposals will be further elaborated into business cases and integrated in the Mekong Delta Platform.

The Netherlands – Vietnam Sustainable Business Event for the Mekong Delta also offered a platform for Dutch and Vietnamese businesses and experts from focused sectors come together for insights, creative and innovative solutions, and business opportunities.

Statistics of the Ministry of Industry and Trade show the Netherlands is the biggest export market in the EU for Vietnamese goods, and also the biggest EU investor in Vietnam.

Bilateral trade has been growing at an average 11.78 percent a year in the past five years. In 2020, despite the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, Vietnam’s exports to the Netherlands in the January-November period still rose 0.22 percent year on year to 6.26 billion USD. Its imports from the European country in the period decreased by 4.13 percent to 582.4 million USD.

As of the end of November 2020, total Dutch investment in Vietnam reached 10.4 billion USD in 375 projects.
