The US non-profit organization - STEAM for Vietnam, US Mission in Vietnam, Scratch Foundation, and Hanoi University of Science and Technology, along with the Vietnam Innovation of General Education Foundation (VIGEF), just released a press statement announcing their collaboration to organize the 2024 Train the Trainers program. This year’s theme will be “Computational Thinking and Generative AI Curriculum Design.”

This is a free training program on Computational Thinking and Generative AI for teachers, helping them understand and apply advanced tools in teaching.

In recent years generative artificial intelligence has had a significant impact on the field of education. The emergence of generative AI has made lesson design, and research easier for teachers. They can design learning paths tailored to the individual characteristics, results, and learning styles of each student in classes of 30-40 students, transforming the “one-size-fits-all” learning into an experience that suits each student’s learning style.

The use of AI in schools has become more and more widespread globally, but there are differences among countries in terms of readiness to embrace the technology.

In Asia, countries and regions such as the Republic of Korea and China announced plans in recent years to incorporate AI in their education systems. Singapore’s Education Ministry also adopted AI for the teaching of maths in public primary schools nationwide last year after a two-year pilot project involving 33 schools. The ministry is expanding AI to other subjects such as the English language.

According to a 2023 study by the Academy of Policy and Development on Artificial Intelligence in Education, “AI cannot completely replace instructors. Teaching is not merely about delivering knowledge, but also involves the important elements of creativity, social emotions, and the instructor decides the appropriate time to use AI-supported tools.” However, in Vietnam and across the world, many teachers are not yet well-prepared to use AI effectively in the classroom.

The AI summer camp program is part of a series of activities for teachers and university instructors to introduce them to computational thinking and the application of generative AI in teaching. The program also builds a community of educators united in the mission to enhance the quality of education in Vietnam, creating equal and high-quality learning opportunities for all students across Vietnam.

The course includes 12 lessons and will be held online every Sunday from June to August 2024. AI experts will lead participants throughout the program.

The main activities and lessons will focus on applying practical applications of AI in STEM education. After the course, teachers can create engaging, lively learning materials, personalize curricula for each student, and rapidly develop projects with generative AI.

Additional support for teachers, educational organizations, and educators will continue throughout the year with the STEAMese Festival 2024 in July 2024; Southeast Asia Scratch Educator Meetup 2024 in October 2024; and a series of webinars on community development from September 2024 to March 2025.
