Vietnam poised to enter new era of national transformation
In recent speeches at significant conferences and forums, General Secretary To Lam has frequently emphasized that Vietnam is preparing to enter a new phase of development, an era he describes as "the nation's era of transformation."
For 55 years, Vietnam has been implementing the Testament of President Ho Chi Minh, successfully overcoming numerous obstacles to achieve significant socio-economic growth and development. |
On August 13, General Secretary To Lam stated that the upcoming Congress will take place amid a period of global shifts of historic significance, presenting both opportunities and challenges. He highlighted that, with the achievements accumulated over 40 years of renewal, the solidarity of the Party, people, and armed forces, new opportunities under the Party’s wise leadership, Vietnam is equipped to embark on this new development phase. He urged for a consensus on recognizing this "new historical starting point" and "new era of transformation," calling for stronger innovation in the format and content of the Party Congress documents to meet the demands of this pivotal time.
On September 20, in his closing remarks at the 10th Plenum of the 13th Central Committee, the General Secretary reaffirmed the Central Committee's consensus on Vietnam's accumulated strength and position after 40 years of renewal. He declared, “With the foundation and strength built over 40 years of renewal, the unity of the Party, the people, and the armed forces, along with new opportunities, we have all the necessary conditions for a new era of development. The 14th Congress document must establish strategic orientations, key tasks, and solutions to unleash productive forces fully, maximize internal resources, and leverage external resources. This means taking human resources and domestic capabilities as the foundation, with science, technology, and innovation as breakthroughs, to propel the nation into a new era - the era of Vietnam's transformation."
On October 21, during the opening session of the 8th meeting of the 15th National Assembly, General Secretary To Lam highlighted that "the world is undergoing epochal changes, and Vietnam stands at the historical threshold of a new era - the nation’s era of transformation." He called upon the National Assembly, its bodies, and deputies to demonstrate unity, responsibility, and innovation to fulfill their mandates, contributing to the collective effort to build a prosperous, democratic, and modern socialist Vietnam. This vision aligns with President Ho Chi Minh’s aspiration for the nation to stand shoulder to shoulder with the world’s great powers.
Meaning of "Nation’s era of transformation"
General Secretary To Lam’s reference to "the nation’s era of transformation" denotes a fundamentally new stage of development that differs qualitatively from previous periods, bringing about profound changes across all facets of society. Since the 20th century, Vietnam has experienced three pivotal eras. The first was the era of national independence, marked by the success of the August Revolution in 1945. The second was the era of comprehensive national renewal, initiated by the 6th Party Congress in 1986. The current phase is poised to be the era of a prosperous and happy Vietnam following 40 years of renewal, symbolizing a period of national breakthroughs fueled by accumulated conditions, and readiness for a transformative future.

This "era of transformation" reflects Vietnam’s preparations for a new chapter of growth, elevating the country’s potential, position, and international standing to unprecedented heights. Far from being subjective or premature, this assessment is rooted in an objective evaluation of the achievements amassed over four decades of renewal, showcasing strategic vision and steadfast confidence in the nation’s future trajectory.
Strategic goals for new era
Guided by the Party’s 13th Congress and recent Central Committee meetings, the overarching objective for this new era is clear. By 2030, on the centenary of the Party’s founding, Vietnam aims to become a developing nation with modern industry and high middle-income status, supported by an advanced, competitive, and effective management system. The economy will be dynamic, rapidly growing, and sustainable, independent yet globally integrated, driven by science, technology, and innovation. Social welfare, democracy, justice, and safety will be prioritized, ensuring a peaceful and prosperous life for all citizens.
By 2045, on the 100th anniversary of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (now the Socialist Republic of Vietnam), the nation aspires to achieve developed, high-income status. These goals reflect a synthesis of Vietnam’s achievements over 40 years of renewal and the collective aspirations of its people, marking the dawn of a transformative era for the country.
