Enhance Economic Cooperation Through New Transport Routes

Vietnam and Poland share a long-standing tradition of friendly relations, with both nations actively organizing activities to celebrate the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties (February 4, 1950 – February 4, 2025). Over the years, bilateral relations between Vietnam and Poland have steadily strengthened across all fields, especially in trade and investment.

In terms of trade, bilateral trade turnover between the two countries reached over USD 2.8 billion in 2023, a 5.9% increase compared to 2022. Of this, Vietnam's exports to Poland accounted for more than USD 2.4 billion (a 7% rise), while imports from Poland were valued at around USD 374 million (a slight decrease of 0.4%). In the first ten months of 2024, bilateral trade exceeded USD 2.8 billion, marking a 21.8% growth compared to the same period in 2023. Vietnam's exports reached over USD 2.5 billion (up 24.3%), and imports from Poland exceeded USD 321 million (up 5%).

Despite these positive outcomes, Director of the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry Ho Chi Minh City office (VCCI-HCM) Tran Ngoc Liem, noted that trade and investment relations between Vietnam and Poland have yet to reach their full potential. Consequently, both nations have agreed to elevate their bilateral relationship to a new level. Given that both countries have maritime access, developing port infrastructure and maritime transport is crucial for their economic growth and fostering bilateral trade relations.

Speaking at the Vietnam-Poland Business Conference, organized on November 28 by VCCI-HCM in collaboration with the Polish Investment and Trade Agency and the Gdańsk Port Authority, Tran Ngoc Liem emphasized that direct connections between Poland and Vietnam would help reduce transportation time and costs, streamline the flow of Vietnamese goods into Europe, and facilitate Polish exports to Vietnam’s growing consumer market. These developments are poised to deepen bilateral trade and strengthen economic ties between the two countries.

"Many Vietnamese logistics enterprises are already exploring and establishing international freight routes between Vietnam and Poland. However, these efforts remain limited compared to the potential for cooperation between the two sides. The recent visit of the Gdańsk Port Authority delegation to Vietnam provides an excellent opportunity for businesses in both countries, particularly those in port infrastructure, logistics, transportation, and import-export trade, to exchange information, address shared concerns, and explore new avenues for collaboration," e remarked.

Strengthening Economic Relations

Managing Director of the Gdańsk Port Authority Dorota Pyć, highlighted that Poland and Vietnam have enjoyed over 70 years of diplomatic relations. In recent years, their economic partnership has grown significantly, with trade reaching new heights last year and showing even greater potential for growth.

“We aim to strengthen and expand cooperation by offering Vietnamese companies new opportunities to access the European market through the Port of Gdańsk. With our strategic location, the port can serve as an ideal entry point for Vietnamese goods into Europe and as a gateway for Polish and European products into Vietnam,” She stated.

According to businesses from both countries, the launch of new shipping connections between Gdańsk Port and Vũng Tàu in February 2025 marks a new era in Poland-Vietnam economic cooperation. Weekly MSC services—BRITANNIA (westbound) and ALBATROS (eastbound) - along with additional weekly services operated by the GEMINI alliance, will significantly enhance the efficiency and scale of trade between the two nations.

As a result, Vietnam stands to benefit substantially from strengthened trade relations with Poland. “Vietnam is becoming a key player in the global economy, rapidly expanding its market and ranking among the fastest-growing economies in Southeast Asia. The increasing interest of Polish consumers and businesses in Vietnamese products underscores the promising prospects for continued economic cooperation,” noted Arkadiusz Marchewka, Poland's Deputy Minister of Infrastructure.

Poland also recognizes the immense potential in strengthening trade relations with Vietnamese partners. The EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA), enacted in 2020, has eliminated over 99% of tariffs on traded goods. Polish companies can now capitalize on favorable conditions to export products such as fish, dairy, cream, chemicals, spirits, and processed food to Vietnam in the coming years. This paves the way for further growth in Polish exports to Vietnam, valued at approximately USD 413 million in 2023.

“The Vietnamese market is not only an opportunity but a necessity for Polish entrepreneurs with global aspirations. It is a market where Polish products have vast growth potential and where partners are eager to collaborate,” remarked Piotr Harasimowicz, Head of the Foreign Trade Office of the Polish Investment and Trade Agency in Ho Chi Minh City.
