Plan International Vietnam in collaboration with the Department of Foreign Affairs of Ha Giang province, the People's Committee of Hoang Su Phi district, and the Department of Education and Training of Hoang Su Phi district on October 31 launched a project supporting people to recover early after Typhoon No. 3 (Yagi) in Ha Giang.

With funding from the European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO), the project aims to support local people, especially children, women and vulnerable groups, to stabilize their lives soon, while enhancing the community's ability to respond to natural disasters, implemented in three communes of Chien Pho, Pos Lo, and Tung San, Hoang Su Phi district.

Beyond multi-purpose cash support packages to help households quickly address their most urgent immediate needs, the project also aims to reduce community vulnerability by improving access to clean water and sanitation services, creating favorable conditions and a safe learning environment for children to return to school. In parallel, the project also provides psychological support services in the community as well as in schools for women and children in affected areas, contributing to reducing the risk of abuse and protecting vulnerable groups from the risk of becoming victims of violence and gender-based violence.

In that situation, the Provincial People's Committee, the Provincial Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee and the Department of Foreign Affairs have called for help from the community as well as from international organizations and non-governmental organizations at home and abroad. Thanks to the enthusiastic support of the units, up to now we have received a valuable source of support through programs and projects with a total value of nearly VND 30 billion (USD 1,18 million), Thang said, adding that this amount will be focused on overcoming the consequences, helping people to soon stabilize their lives, especially in Hoang Su Phi district, one of the most severely affected localities.

Speaking at the launching ceremony, Duong Van Tuy, Plan Project Manager in Ha Giang emphasized this support helps people reduce immediate difficulties, stabilize their lives and gradually restore production. In order for the project to be implemented most effectively, ensure progress and support the right subjects, the Plan project office in Ha Giang will closely coordinate with the Foreign Department, the Plan Project Management Board of Hoang Su Phi district, the Department of Education and Training, the authorities of the three project communes and related parties.

Over the next 6 months in Ha Giang, it is estimated that nearly 4,000 people affected by Typhoon Yagi will directly benefit from the project. In addition, more than 7,000 local people in the three communes of Chien Pho, Po Lo and Tung San will also indirectly benefit through improved sanitation and health services.

In September, Plan International, in collaboration with local authorities, delivered the first round of emergency relief to 35 households, including 18 families with children within Plan International’s sponsorship program. The relief package included VND 5 million (USD 197) in unconditional cash support to help families take the initiative in addressing their most urgent needs, along with food and necessities including 30kg of rice, 2 litres of cooking oil, and 4 menstrual hygiene kits.

In addition to distributing the relief supplies, Plan International staff and local community leaders conducted awareness-raising sessions for families, guiding protecting children during natural disasters and providing information for girls on menstrual hygiene and self-care. Advices on using the relief funds effectively to address immediate needs in the aftermath of the storm were also offered at the site.
