Save the Children: 35-year Journey with Vietnamese children

Reproductive health is not just a personal matter—it is a foundation for the sustainable development of society. In Vietnam, Save the Children has been driving positive change through projects aimed at raising awareness, improving knowledge, promoting behavioral change, and enhancing reproductive health services. These efforts are helping to build a healthier, more confident generation of young people.

From lush vegetable gardens in mountainous regions to innovative school health initiatives, Save the Children has helped transform the lives of millions of Vietnamese children. Beyond improving nutrition, the organization has inspired a more holistic approach to health and life skills—laying the groundwork for a resilient next generation.

With the support of Save the Children and the dedication of medical teams, the Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) method has been and continues to help preterm and low-birth-weight infants overcome critical moments. This model has expanded from hospitals to communities in remote areas.

Save the Children International (SCI) in Vietnam is a non-governmental organization that has made significant contributions to community development, thereby supporting Vietnam’s socio-economic growth. Over its 35 years of operation in Vietnam, SCI has demonstrated not only long-term dedication through its strong commitments but also an innovative approach tailored to the actual needs of children and communities. This statement was made by Tran Phu Cuong, head of the People's Aid Coordinating Committee, in an interview with the Vietnam Times.

For a decade, Save the Children has been working in the mountainous areas of Lao Cai province to improve the quality of life for tens of thousands of children and their families. The progress in education and health care that the organization has brought to the community has gradually created sustainable changes for local people.

By 2024, the project has benefited over 94,000 children across five districts of Lao Cai: Bao Thang, Bao Yen, Bat Xat, Muong Khuong, and Van Ban.

The program was attended by Tran Thi Minh Thu, Head of the Department of Higher Education and Continuing Education (Lao Cai Provincial Department of Education and Training); Dam Thi Hoai An, Head of the Bao Yen District Department of Education and Training; Le Thi Thanh Huong, Country Director of Save the Children in Vietnam; representatives from the local government; teachers and students of the school.

In the two days of November 4th and 5th, thousands of households in Yen Bai, which were severely damaged by Typhoon Number 3 (Yagi), received support from the emergency relief program implemented by Save the Children in collaboration with partners.

To support households affected by the drought and provide them with resources for daily living expenses, ensure family health and children's health and education, Save the Children collaborates with the Ca Mau Union of Friendship Organizations to implement a cash support package for disadvantaged families.

On October 1, in Bat Xat district (Lao Cai), Save the Children International - Representative Office in Vietnam coordinated with the Lao Cai Red Cross Society to launch the "Emergency relief project for households affected by floods caused by storm No. 3 in 2024 in Lao Cai". The activity runs under a relief project framework approved by the Lao Cai People's Committee in its Decision No. 2414/QD-UBND dated September 24, 2024.
