Touching love story of dwarf couple in Sai Gon
(VNF) - Though only 1.2-1.3 meters high and living a hard life by selling lottery in Sai Gon, the two little people end up with a happy family after more than a half year dating.
Nguyen Van Luong (27 yrs old, born in Dong Thap) and his wife Nguyen Thi Thu Dao (25 yrs old, born in Binh Dinh), everyday on the self-designed wheelchair wander about all streets of Saigon to sell lottery tickets. Pedestrians are easily impressed by their petite figure.
Dao is only 1.2 meters high while her husband is higher, 1.3 meters. “My siblings are normal, just only me tiny without knowing the reason’’, Dao said. Similarly, Luong’s parents are normal but their three children were born dwarf.
Quitting school from grade 6, when 18 years old, Luong went to Saigon selling lottery tickets for living. In early 2014, once astray, he met his Dao. Feeling empathy for each other, both exchanged phone numbers.
“After breaking the ice, I took the initiative to invite her for walks and selling lottery tickets together. And so, everyday I pick her up from 1 District to Tan Binh District. I liked Dao from the first met, however it took almost a year later that I dared to confess my love to her’’, Luong said.
Like any other girl, Dao bashfully said nothing. “I loved him too but I couldn’t think of anything else than earning money. Moreover, both are dwarf. People will laugh at us.”. So it took her 4 months later to accept his proposal.
Their love aslo encountered obstacles when facing oppositions from Dao’s family. Lastly, Dao’s family accepted the couple after three times of convincing. They got married in a group wedding in 2010.
In 2016, Dao was pregnant, however her child lived only 5 hours after being born. “The doctor said my wife’s resistance was very weak, so was the child. We were deeply sad but it’s fate. The doctor also recommend that we should not have children because of high possibility of premature death’’, Luong said.
Dao’s health is not good while Luong’s one eye is also blind.
Every day, they sell 150 pairs of lottery tickets.
At noon and the afternoon, the couple back to the inn to rest and eat.
Their meager meal, they usually spend less than VND 60.000/ day (about USD 3) for food.
Luong confessed, due to the burden of life, gifts or romantic gestures with his wife is almost nonexistent. “She did understand that. Sometime we quarreled because of unsold tickets, but we made up with each other soon after. If having capital, I will switch to sell fried fish. Traditional lottery tickets now are more difficult to sell''./.
