US Air Force Band Successfully Concludes First Vietnam Showcase

From 30 June to 2 July, Pacific Brass from the US Air Force Band performed for Vietnamese audiences in 3 major cities of Hanoi, Hai Phong and Hai Duong, in the stream of cultural engagements by the two nations to celebrate 10 years of establishing comprehenship partnership (2013-2023).

The Ho Guom pedestrian street in 30 June in Hanoi was the first public stage of Pacific Brass, the quintet of the US Air Force band, in Vietnam. This special appearance drew the attention of a big crowd, including not only local people but also expats and tourists.

Representing the organizing committee, Acting Cultural Attaché of the US Embassy in Vietnam Rebecca Johnson stressed in her opening remarks that this visit by the Pacific Brass is among the stream of cultural engagements to celebrate the Vietnam - US partnership over the past few decades.

"This year makes the 10 year anniversary of our comprehensive partnership with Vietnam and the great collaboration between our two countries. The two countries can only grow closer through connecting our citizens out of personal level through programs like this concert you are going to hear today," said the Acting Cultural Attaché.

Pacific Brass is a quintet of the United States Air Force Band (US Air Force Band) with a history of more than 50 years. In October 1941, the United States Air Force Band of the Pacific Region was formed at Eglin Field, Florida. During World War II, the band was stationed in places like Bora Bora, French Polynesia, Espiritu Santo, New Hebrides, Guadacanal, Solomon Islands, Morotai, Dutch Indies, Los Negros, and Philippines. Finally, in July 1988, the band moved to Japan and continued its mission in the Western Pacific from Yokota Air Base.

The band currently has 24 full-time professional musicians; Each year, the band performs an average of 200 shows to more than 125,000 spectators. The band has toured in Hong Kong, Myanmar, Guam, Singapore, India, Mongolia, Malaysia, Indonesia, Australia, Thailand, Taiwan, Philippines, and Laos, and has toured frequently in South Korea and Japan.

Representing the band, Pacific Brass's leader Jeriad Wood believes cultural exchanges is highly important because they help strengthen the strong bond between our two peoples.

"There's five members of this all play different masses, performing a variety of jazz, pop music, also marches, a traditional American art form. I am very proud to be an American citizen to come here to share [traditional American art form] with the people of Vietnam. Vietnamese people have been so welcoming. This is the cultural exchange that brings a very moving moment that we get to play your traditional music as well," said Pacific Brass's leader Jeriad Wood, explaining the significance of the Vietnam tour.

"Today's show is very special because we get to interact with talented American artists. Our goal is to promote music that brings joy for both the musicians and the audiences," said a representative of Bee Music.

On 2 July, also the final night of Pacific Brass's Vietnam tour, there were a big crowd came to Xu Dong Cultural Center Square (Hai Duong City) to enjoy the show.

The quintet performed 17 pieces, all are famous hits in the US and around the world. There was also a special arranged piece of Vietnamese folk song "Trong Com", which combined the traditional music from both countries.
