US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman is set to visit four Asian countries, including Vietnam from June 5 to June 14, demonstrating the US commitment to the Indo-Pacific region, the State Department said on Friday.

The visit of the US Deputy Secretary of State comes after US-ASEAN Special Summit in May, President Joe Biden's visits to the Republic of Korea and Japan, the Quad Summit in Tokyo, and the US' announcement of Indo-Pacific Economic Framework.

The first stop of Sherman's trip will be the Republic of Korea, followed by the Philippines, Laos and Vietnam.

“The deputy secretary’s travel to the region reflects the United States’ continued commitment to the Indo-Pacific,” the department said.

Sherman has already made multiple visits to the region, including to China. During this trip, she will meet in Seoul with her RoK's and Japanese counterparts while in the Philippines, Sherman will meet with President-elect Ferdinand Marcos Jnr.

In the Laotian capital of Vientiane, Sherman is expected to discuss the country’s sustainable development goals, new American support for clearing unexploded mines left from the war era, and civil society initiatives to promote “mutual understanding between our countries”.

According to the US State Department, during her stay in Hanoi, Sherman will meet with Vietnamese officials, including Deputy Prime Minister Le Van Thanh, Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son and Deputy Foreign Minister Ha Kim Ngoc to highlight the strength of the Vietnam-US comprehensive partnership as well as the US support for a strong, prosperous and independent Vietnam.

Sherman will also announce additional US support for unexploded ordnance clearance operations to demonstrate her nation's commitment to deal with war aftermath.

She will also discuss supply chain resilience with private sector representatives in Vietnam and will join Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Minh Hoan to launch a project on wildlife trade combat in Vietnam by the US Agency for International Development (USAID).

In addition, during her stay in Ho Chi Minh City, the US diplomat will meet municipal Party Secretary Nguyen Van Nen and give a speech at Fulbright University.

Just last month, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh’s trip to the US to attend the ASEAN-US Special Summit, and pay working visits to the US and the United Nations (UN) from May 11-17 has produced a lot of important results, both multilaterally and bilaterally, contributing to promoting the relations between ASEAN and the US, Vietnam and the UN, and Vietnam and the US, and affirming the country's position and prestige in the international arena.

The working trip by the Government leader also reaffirmed that economics and trade are an important pillar in the Vietnam-US relations, according to VNA.

The PM attended and spoke at the Vietnam-US investment promotion conference, witnessed the hand-over of a series of cooperation agreements in various fields, and received leaders of leading US groups and overseas Vietnamese-owned enterprises.

Despite his busy working schedule, PM Chinh reserved time to meet US friends and attended three meetings with Vietnamese people living in the US, which affirmed that overseas Vietnamese, including those in the US, are an integral part of the Vietnamese ethnic community.

It can be said that this working trip to the US by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and the Vietnamese high-ranking delegation is a success, contributing to the successful implementation of the country’s foreign policy.
