Vietnam - An Important Market to Denmark Agricultural Sector
From May 14 to 16, Jacob Jensen, Minister of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries of Denmark, led a high-level delegation to visit and work in Vietnam. Accordingly, the delegation includes Danish agricultural and food businesses, and companies possessing advanced technology and know-how in green transformation and sustainable development.
These are companies and manufacturers with world-leading solutions in food production and processing, storage, optimization of agricultural and food resource use, and water and drainage engineering. The goal of this visit focuses on promoting high-level policy dialogue with Vietnamese partners on sustainable food production and the development of efficient, resource-saving supply chains.
The Danish Ministry of Food, Agriculture, and Fisheries and the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development signed a memorandum of understanding to enhance cooperation. |
According to Minister Jacob Jensen, Vietnam and Denmark have long-term and close bilateral cooperation in the field of food safety. Since 2017, the cooperation program between the two countries has focused on food safety and animal feed production.
The program is also an important component of the Green Strategic Partnership agreement, launched by the two Prime Ministers in November 2023. In particular, Vietnam and Denmark are committed to promoting green transition and green growth, supporting Vietnam to build a green economy and complete the commitment to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.
Specifically, the Strategic Sector Cooperation on Food (SSC Food) program between Vietnam and Denmark, run by the Danish Veterinary and Food Authority (DVFA) and the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) cooperate in implementation.

Phase 1, the project focuses on improving basic conditions for developing the animal feed industry by enhancing the capacity of state officials and improving the legal framework on veterinary medicine with caution.
Phase 2, from April 2020 to April 2024, the cooperation program focuses on key areas such as improving the capacity of local officials in all steps of the food chain, combating antibiotic resistance (AMR), controlling animal feed, traceability, and recall of unsafe food.
To extend the above cooperation program, on May 14, Minister Jacob Jensen signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Minister MARD. In the future, the cooperation program will increase its focus on promoting the green transition in agriculture and food production, aiming to build a more sustainable and resilient food system.
"In implementing the green transition and sustainable food production, Denmark has developed strong, innovative methods and approaches for the entire value chain, helping to increase production productivity, but at the same time reduce water and energy consumption. We look forward to sharing these experiences and inspiring deeper collaboration with Vietnamese partners,” Minister Jacob Jensen said.
During this visit, Minister Jacob Jensen also shared about antibiotic resistance (AMR) in agriculture and aquaculture, which is currently a major threat to public and human health. This is also an important content of the Strategic Sector Cooperation on Food (SSC Food) program.

According to Danish businesses, Vietnam is an attractive destination and an important market for Danish companies in the agricultural sector. Currently, Denmark is one of the EU countries with the highest per capita export level to Vietnam. In particular, the agricultural food sector accounts for about half of Denmark's total export turnover to Vietnam.
In the next 2 days, the Danish business delegation will visit Food Bank Vietnam, an important partner in the field of reducing food loss and waste, a pangasius farm in Tien Giang and an aquaculture feed factory in Ben Tre, where Vietnamese and Danish research institutes and companies are collaborating to increase the use of green solutions towards sustainable aquaculture production in Vietnam.
In addition, the workshop "Sustainable Agriculture and Food Production: Danish Advanced Technology and Financial Opportunities" will also be held on May 16 for Danish and Vietnamese policymakers and businesses to sit down to discuss and exchange policies, experiences, technology, finance, and business opportunities with each other.
