Vietnam and British Localities Strengthen Cooperation

On May 16-17, Vietnamese Ambassador to the UK Nguyen Hoang Long visited and worked in Manchester, the capital of Greater Manchester, UK, and Cardiff, the capital of Wales, to promote the cooperation between Vietnam and British localities, especially in business, trade, investment, and education.

The visit took place within the framework of the Vietnam-UK Friendship Year 2023 - celebrating 50 years of diplomatic relations, organized by the Vietnamese Embassy in many localities across the UK.

In Manchester City, on May 16, the Vietnamese Embassy in the UK with KPMG, the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce and the UK-ASEAN Business Council held a seminar on business and trade in Vietnam and ASEAN.

The seminar was attended by more than 50 British businesses interested in the Vietnamese market and businesses that are directly investing and doing business in Vietnam, including large corporations such as KPMG, HSBC.

At the seminar, Ambassador Nguyen Hoang Long provided basic and promising information about the Vietnamese market. Vietnam has a stable political and social background, a population of 100 million with a golden population structure, a dynamic economy, fast and sustainable development. Vietnam has an open consumer culture for British products, including consumer goods and services such as healthcare and education.

The Ambassador emphasized that the 13th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam identified three strategic breakthroughs in terms of institutions, human resources and infrastructure.

The Government just approved the National Power Development Plan VIII, along with Vietnam's strong commitments to green and clean energy transition and towards the goal of neutralizing emissions by 2050.

Vietnam and the UK have the opportunity to strengthen cooperation, becoming important partners in fields where the UK has strengths such as education, training, construction, finance, health, energy, green transition.

Ambassador Nguyen Hoang Long said that British businesses have an advantage in the Vietnamese market when British goods have good brands and are popular in Vietnam.

He encouraged British businesses to directly visit Vietnam to learn more about this market, thereby having appropriate investment and business cooperation strategies.

Speakers at the conference appreciated the Vietnam market with its openness, dynamism, favorable business and investment environment.

Many British businesses said they are particularly interested in Vietnam and wish to expand investment in this market soon.

In the city of Cardiff, on May 17, Ambassador Nguyen Hoang Long worked with First Minister of Wales Mark Drakeford, Minister for Education and Welsh Language Jeremy Miles. He attended and spoke at a special session of the Welsh Parliament on the prospect of cooperation between Vietnam and Wales.

At the meeting, the two sides reviewed the important cooperation results achieved, exchanged directions and plans in the coming time.

Wales appreciated Vietnam's sustainable economic, social achievements and future cooperation prospects, especially in education, culture, tourism, and people-to-people diplomacy.

For education, which is a key area of cooperation, Wales identified Vietnam along with Europe, North America and India as a strategic partner.

Wales is committed to continuing to promote future cooperation activities to support the participation of universities and educational institutions on both sides.

First Minister of Wales Mark Drakeford proposed that the Vietnamese Embassy in the UK strengthen the organization of seminars, to promote and introduce Vietnam in Wales to enhance common understanding.

Ambassador Nguyen Hoang Long thanked Wales for their support in the past. Wales is continuing to implement effective support activities for Vietnam, especially in the field of education.

The Ambassador proposed that Wales appoint an agency to act as the focal point in cooperation with Vietnam. The two sides researched and promoted the signing of a written agreement at the local level to create a foundation for promoting cooperation in the long term.

He affirmed that the Vietnamese Embassy is ready to support this exchange and signing process.

On behalf of the Vietnamese Government, Ambassador Nguyen Hoang Long also invited First Minister of Wales Mark Drakeford to visit Vietnam in the near future.
