Representatives of the agricultural sectors of Vietnam and Canada agreed to strengthen cooperative activities and promote the relationship between the two countries in the fields of agriculture, food safety, and agricultural trade, bringing the import-export turnover of agricultural products to the target of US$10 billion.

This information was given at the meeting between Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Minh Hoan and Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food in Canada, held on October 30 in Hanoi.

At the meeting, Minister Le Minh Hoan said that in the context of the two countries celebrating 50 years of diplomatic relations, the visit of the Canadian Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food demonstrated efforts to strengthen cooperation between the two Ministries.

This also shows that agriculture plays an important role in the bilateral relationship between the two countries.

According to Minister Le Minh Hoan, in 2017, when Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food in Canada, came to Vietnam, the import-export turnover of agricultural products between the two countries was only US$623 million.

To date, this number increased to more than US$1 billion. More Vietnamese agricultural products are available in Canadian supermarkets such as seafood, vegetables, cashews, coffee, pepper, rubber, and wood.

Similarly, many Canadian agricultural products are also popular with Vietnamese people such as snow crab and Alaskan lobster. The food safety project funded by the Canadian Government for Vietnam has now entered the implementation phase with support from Canadian experts.

This is a great opportunity to promote agricultural, forestry, and fishery trade between Vietnam and Canada.

Lawrence MacAulay also congratulated Vietnam on producing the African swine fever vaccine and expressed his hope that the two sides could strengthen cooperation in this field.

Minister Le Minh Hoan expressed hope that barriers to agricultural, forestry and fishery trade between the two countries will soon be removed.

He believed that in the coming time, the import-export turnover between the countries will continue to increase and the people of the two countries will enjoy many of each other's agricultural products.

The two sides can cooperate in the field of training agricultural interns (students coming to study and work on Canadian farms and get paid) and agricultural workers.

Regarding food security, Minister Le Minh Hoan said Vietnam is a country with 100 million people, facing the challenges of climate change. However, Vietnam is a responsible country in ensuring global food security.

Minister Le Minh Hoan emphasized that the contents of Canada's Indo-Pacific Strategy are a good opportunity for Vietnam and Canada to strengthen cooperation in restoring agricultural supply chains, improving biodiversity, circular agriculture, and building a green and sustainable future.

Vietnam wishes to cooperate and learn from Canada's experience in building the carbon market, reducing emissions, and embracing the digital transformation of the industry.
