Vietnam and Singapore Foreign Ministers Strengthen Countries’ Close Ties

At talks with Singapore’s Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan during his official visit to Singapore on July 18, Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son expressed his pleasure to visit Singapore for the first time as Foreign Minister.
He thanked the welcome of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Singapore and appreciated that Minister Vivian Balakrishnan attended the 50th Anniversary of the diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Singapore organized by the Embassy of Vietnam in Singapore on July 17.
Singapore's Foreign Minister welcomed the first official visit to Singapore by Minister Bui Thanh Son.
He assessed the visit as one of the important activities on the occasion that the two countries are organizing activities to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, and the 10th anniversary of the strategic partnership.
He affirmed that Singapore considers Vietnam an important partner in the region, and wishes to strengthen the strategic partnership with Vietnam for the benefit of the two peoples, and for peace, stability, and prosperity in the region.
The two Ministers expressed their satisfaction at the close and effective development of the two countries, reflected in the frequency of high-level visits and bilateral cooperation, including the role of the two foreign ministries.
Economic cooperation, trade and investment are being promoted. Singapore leads ASEAN, and ranks second in the world in terms of investment capital in Vietnam with 3,273 projects, total capital of US$73.453 billion, accounting for about 23% of total registered FDI capital.
The Vietnam-Singapore Industrial Parks continued to operate effectively, becoming a symbol of success in cooperation between the two countries.
Cooperation in other important fields such as national defense, security, education, culture and people-to-people exchanges is valued for development, contributing to enhancing mutual understanding between the two peoples.
The two sides, Vietnam and Singapore, agreed to work together to promote negotiations and sign important cooperation documents, including a document to upgrade the framework agreement on connecting the two economies.
Discussing regional and international issues of mutual concern, the two Ministers agreed that in the context that the world and regional situation continues to be complicated and unpredictable, the two countries should continue to strengthen cooperation, maintain solidarity, and promote the central role of ASEAN.
The two sides agreed to build the East Sea into a sea of peace, cooperation, and development, and together with ASEAN countries to strictly and fully implement the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC).
The two countries strive to soon achieve an effective, efficient, and consistent Code of Conduct in the East Sea (COC) in line with international law and the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) 1982.

The same day, Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son had a meeting with Singaporean Senior Minister and Coordinating Minister for National Security Teo Chee Hean, during which they agreed to continuously contribute to advancing the bilateral cooperative relationship between Vietnam and Singapore, including bolstering cooperation and accelerating the signing of documents in security and defense.
They vowed to jointly maintain peace, stability, and cooperation in the region, reinforce solidarity and unity, contribute to building a resilient and prosperous ASEAN, and promote its central role, especially in strategic regional issues of the region.
