The above information was announced at a recent meeting by Lt. Gen. Phung Si Tan, Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army, with the leaders of the Vietnam Department of Peacekeeping Operations (VNDPKO) under the Ministry of National Defense, and other representatives of relevant units.

According to a report of the VNDPKO, the MND's leader proposed to the Prime Minister to implement the request of the UN, at the same time, support medical supplies that Vietnam can produce for the Government of South Sudan. These activities aim to contribute to strengthening diplomatic relations and create favorable conditions for Vietnamese peacekeepers who are on-duty in the country.

Major General Hoang Kim Phung, Director of the VNDPKO, informed Gen. Tan and the delegation of the important achievements that the unit has gained in recent years.

He also proposed several measures to improve the unit's capacity in managing and deploying forces participating in UN peacekeeping operations.

The representatives of the agencies and units under the MND also reported the results of their coordination with the VNDPKO, and cooperative plans in the coming time, especially the preparation of personnel and equipment for Vietnamese military engineers participating in the upcoming UN peacekeeping mission, and training courses for Level-2 Field Hospital Rotations 3 and 4.

Speaking at the event, Gen. Tan shared the difficulties and challenges that the Vietnamese peacekeeping force must overcome in special areas with harsh weather conditions and unstable security.

In the context of the complicated developments of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Level-2 Field Hospital Rotation 2 of Vietnam in South Sudan has actively advised the UNMISS to implement measures to prevent and combat infection, as well as develop response scenarios to effectively handle all circumstances.

The Vietnamese peacekeepers also presented handmade masks to the staff of the UNMISS and local people.

Regarding the tasks in the coming time, Gen. Tan asked the VNDPKO to continue promoting the spirit of initiative and creativity in implementing central political tasks in the context of the complicated developments of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Vietnam has participated in the UN peacekeeping missions since 2014. It has dispatched hundreds of officials to missions in South Sudan and the Central African Republic, working in the Movement Control section at the UNMISS.

Its Level-2 hospital in South Sudan covers the largest Protection of Civilians site in South Sudan which provides sanctuary to about 115,000 people.

Especially, Vietnam’s Level-2 Field Hospital No. 2 has received letters praising it as "The best hospital of United Nations peace-keeping missions in South Sudan" or "The bright star among peace-keeping missions", which prove the hospital's capabilities and reputation among United Nations missions and international friends. The acknowledgment reflects Vietnam’s commitments and responsible engagement in the UN peace-keeping mission./.
