Determination to strengthen gender equality with international community

As an active member of the United Nations and many international organizations, Vietnam, along with other countries, continues to uphold the sense of responsibility in gender equality and empowering women on a global scale.

The gender equality commitments in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development represent an important step in the continuation of the Millennium Development Goals.

Specific goals are built on the principles of international conventions and commitments on gender equality and human rights, such as the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW).

"Vietnam has built a solid legal framework on gender equality through the Law on Gender Equality and the Law on Prevention and Control of Domestic Violence, as well as promulgating the National Strategy on Gender Equality for the 2021-2030 period.

Vietnam's achievements are also reflected in the Government's strong commitments and efforts to enhance the status of Vietnamese women in all fields, including politics."

Elisa Fernandez Saenz, UN Women Representative in Vietnam

On the basis of laws, international conventions and commitments on gender equality and human rights, Vietnam has perfected institutions, policies and laws in accordance with the international commitments.

The 2013 Constitution of Vietnam and many specialized laws have been amended and supplemented on the basis of ensuring the principle of gender equality. These efforts demonstrate Vietnam's strong determination to strengthen gender equality and the advancement of women with a clear strategy in line with national practice.

In addition to promulgating laws and policies, Vietnam has also issued policies and solutions to achieve gender equality goals.

The National Strategy on Gender Equality 2021-2030 was issued late last year. These are important documents to concretize goals and solutions to carry out the provisions of the Law on Gender Equality. They also show the Government's determination in the national goals on gender equality.

In the past 10 years, the national goal on gender equality has been implemented synchronously, creating a change in the awareness and actions of the Party committees, authorities, and people on the practice of gender equality.

Women participate more in economic activities and have more opportunities to have good jobs, bringing higher incomes. This makes an important contribution to helping Vietnam maintain the highest economic growth rate in the world over the past decade, despite the political and economic fluctuations of the region and the world. In terms of education, enrollment rates for boys and girls in primary and secondary schools are high and balanced.

Regarding health care, people's life expectancy increases, and access to health care services is improved. This result demonstrates the efforts in gender equality in Vietnam. It is also a solid foundation for all levels and sectors to continue to maintain and strengthen the national gender equality goals in the coming period.
