VNA quoted an interview published in the Swiss newspaper Tribune de Genève as saying that Ambassador Mai Phan Dung affirmed that multilateralism and international integration are at the heart of Vietnam's diplomacy. The country always attaches great importance to the multilateral mechanisms and forums of the UN and WTO, among others, and is proactively participating in multilateral negotiations in Geneva, including as a member of the UN Human Rights Council for the 2023 - 2025 term.

Vietnam wishes to diversify its partnerships and strengthen a peaceful, stable, and favorable international environment for its development. This not only helps better protect national interests but also takes advantage of external resources for sustainable development, contributes to global efforts to solve many common problems, as well as promotes peace and development in the world, he went on.

The Ambassador said that the multilateral system established after World War II has played a significant role in the prevention of wars, the promotion of peace, and international cooperation for the development of nations. However, today's global context is changing, placing new demands on the multilateral system. Humanity faces new challenges such as terrorism, poverty, food security, epidemics, natural disasters, and climate change. The rise of many emerging countries has changed the balance of power. Factors such as lack of trust, protectionist tendencies, rising nationalism, and realpolitik also undermine the multilateral system.

In that context, according to the Ambassador, reform of the multilateral system is not only necessary but also urgent. This reform must be based on respect for the independence, sovereignty, and legitimate interests of all nations. It must promote the democratic and equitable participation of countries in the decision-making process. A comprehensive assessment of the multilateral system, including the security, economic, development, and financial sectors, is essential to address global challenges and advance the common interests of all countries.
