Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on February 14 received Alok Kumar Sharma, British cabinet minister and president for the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26), who is on a working visit to Vietnam. The conference ushered in a new phase in the global effort to respond to climate change, with an international consensus to work together to bring net emissions to "zero" by mid-century.
The Prime Minister welcomed the Minister and President of COP26 for choosing Vietnam as one of the destinations of his Asia trip; congratulate and appreciate the role of the UK and the Minister for the success of COP26.
Discussing the implementation of COP26 results, the Prime Minister said that the Party and State of Vietnam have identified climate change response as one of the difficult but urgent tasks.
With a global, all-people approach and comprehensive action, Vietnam has joined the international community in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, adapting to climate change. Vietnam takes this as an opportunity to switch to a green, circular, and low-carbon development model.

The Prime Minister said the spirit of cooperation is based on sincerity, trust, respect and benefits for all parties.
Since COP26, Vietnam has been seriously and swiftly taking actions to realize its commitments by establishing a National Steering Committee to implement Vietnam's commitments at the COP26, led by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh.
Vietnam is working hard to perfect the legal framework; build detailed plans, measures, and roadmaps; overhaul related strategies and plans; and mobilize investment resources for climate-resilient infrastructure to carry out the commitments.
In the energy sector, Vietnam is reviewing and completing the national electricity development planning, fostering the development of renewable energy sources. Vietnam converts coal power to clean energy in an appropriate, sustainable way, ensuring fairness.
The Prime Minister believes that Vietnam will have necessary legal corridor to well implement the commitments made at COP26. The remaining work is mobilizing resources and implementing with huge financial needs.
He suggested that Alok Kumar Sharma, as the President of COP26, would continue to pay attention to strengthening cooperation between Vietnam, the UK and partners in professional support, technology, capacity and finance.
This allows Vietnam to fulfill its commitments and global initiatives on emission reduction and adaptation to climate change, contributing to sustainable development and ensuring macroeconomic stability.
The Prime Minister called for support for Vietnam to connect with the financial institutions and credit organizations able to provide financial aid and credit for the country similar to the Just Energy Transition Partnership that the UK, France, Germany, the US, and the European Union signed with South Africa.
Vietnam also needs assistance in establishing a domestic carbon market linked with the international one; a Renewable Energy Center to train human resources, transfer technology, share experiences in law and national governance.
Vietnam needs technical assistance to help internalize its commitments at COP26; assess the current status of greenhouse gas emissions of enterprises in Vietnam.
Alok Kumar Sharma shared his feelings about the great change in Vietnam after his visit in May 2021, congratulating Vietnam on its results in pandemic prevention. The partners also appreciated Vietnam' achievements in the implementation of the vaccination campaign.
The Minister and President of COP26 appreciated Vietnam's strong commitments and leading role in the region, making an important contribution to the overall success of the COP26 and the Glasgow Climate Pact.
He welcomed Vietnam's approach, swift and comprehensive actions, and the efforts of the Government, Prime Minister and ministries to ensure commitments are implemented.
