Vietnam receives 403,000 vaccine doses donated by Australian Government

The Australian Consulate in Ho Chi Minh City on behalf of the Australian Government handed over 403,000 doses of AstraZeneca vaccine to Vietnam on August 27. The delivery of these doses is the first installment towards Australia’s commitment of 1.5 million AstraZeneca doses to be shared with Vietnam this year, in support of the Southeast Asian nation's Covid-19 response

Australia is also providing an additional vaccine-related support package to Vietnam through its partnership with the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) worth nearly USD 30 million. They include additional doses of vaccine, syringes, and cold chain equipment, training for health workers, as well as supporting vaccination in remote provinces.

Australia will continue to work closely with Vietnam and other partners in the region to respond to the pandemic, she said, adding that accessing to effective Covid-19 vaccines will support the region's future recovery and stability, and prosperity.

Home-grown vaccine Nanocovax approved by National Biomedical Research Ethics Council

Results from the phase 3a clinical trial of the domestically-produced vaccine Nanocovax on more than 1,000 volunteers have been adopted by the National Biomedical Research Ethics Council (NBREC). This comes after a local research team working on developing Nanocovax unveiled the promising outcomes of the mid-term phase 3a clinical trials on August 22.

The clinical trials of phase 3a involved the participation of 1,004 volunteers based in both Hanoi and Long An. According to the preliminary evaluation of the NBREC, the domestically-developed vaccine fully meets all safety and immunogenicity requirements.

After receiving approval from the council, the dossier and research data of the Nanocovax vaccine will now be transferred to the Advisory Council for issuance of a registration certificate for the circulation of drugs and medicinal ingredients. This is being done in order for the Ministry of Health to consider a decision about granting a conditional emergency license for the vaccine. The time to issue a registration certificate for an eligible vaccine typically happens within 20 days. However, if Nanocovax is able to meet all requirements, then the licensing period may be shorter and may even take less than a week.

UK visa application center reopens in Hanoi

The Vietnamese government has given permission for the U.K. visa application center in Hanoi to reopen after a month on August 30 but with restrictions. It would only function on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays and from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 pm, the British embassy said in its official Facebook page. People coming to the center will have to furnish negative Covid PCR test results obtained not more than 72 hours earlier.

The visa application centers in Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang remain closed as both cities have tough lockdown measures to contain the spread of the Delta variant of Covid-19. The embassy is seeking permission to reopen them.

Britain lifted almost all social distancing measures and restrictions last month. Vietnam is currently on its amber list, which requires visitors to self-isolate for 10 days at home upon arrival.

There are eight cities and provinces that have gone 14 days without new cases, which are Quang Ninh, Bac Kan, Tuyen Quang, Lai Chau, Hoa Binh, Yen Bai, Ha Giang and Kon Tum.

The total number of cases in Vietnam reached 410,366. As of August 27, more than 18.8 million doses of vaccines have been administered, with 2,235,013 people having been fully inoculated.
