On December 13, in Kuching city, Sarawak state, Malaysia, the ASEAN Ports Association (APA) held the 46th meeting hosted by Bintulu Port with support from Bintulu Port Holdings Berhad and Port of Kuching.
The delegation of the Vietnam Seaports Association (VPA) includes the executive committee of VPA, Saigon Newport Corporation (SNP), Saigon Port, Hai Phong Port, Cai Mep International Terminal (CMIT), and Da Nang Port.
APA member countries include Vietnam, Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand.
The ASEAN Ports Association (APA) was originally envisioned as an organization that could provide the proper forum for the achievement of the following broad objectives: exchange of information, harmonization of trade practices, and promotion/facilitation of trade among ASEAN ports. The first annual meeting of the APAA was convened in Manila, Philippines on September 1975. This was attended by port representatives from the five ASEAN member-countries, namely: Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. During the momentous meeting, the members officially approved the Terms of Reference of the Association and subscribed to its objectives, principles and purposes. The forming of the Association represents the collective will of the member-ports to foster friendship, extend support and cooperation to promote the interests of ports, cited Apaport. |
At the 46th APA meeting, delegates focused on discussing issues related to the sustainable development of the seaport system in Southeast Asia, measures to cope with climate change, and develop high-quality human resources.
They also mentioned seaport projects in the region, overcoming difficulties caused by global instability and exchanging information between member ports of the association.

That helps ensure APA's vision and goals such as improving the quality of human resources, efficiency and productivity of member ports, and sustainable development.
Speaking as APA President for the term 2023-2024, Senior Lieutenant Colonel Bui Van Quy said that he would work with APA members to develop and realize initiatives to build the Asean Single Window, build Asean Seaport digital ecosystem, integrate with International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH) and APEC Port Services Network (APSN).
These are aimed at applying a system of connecting, digitizing and greening ports, reducing carbon emissions as committed by governments under COP 26, improve the efficiency of ports for a growing ASEAN seaport community.
