Ginny Chapman, Charge d'Affaires of the New Zealand Embassy in Vietnam, had a meeting with Can Tho city leaders on the afternoon of March 5.
At the meeting, the Secretary of the Party Committee of the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho Nguyen Van Hieu highlighted the growing relationship between Vietnam in general, and Can Tho in particular with New Zealand over the years.
After Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh's official visit to New Zealand in early March, the leaders of both countries hope to upgrade the relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations, and 5 years of strategic partnership in 2025.
Nguyen Van Hieu said that Can Thohas great strengths in agriculture, including rice, seafood, fruit trees, and food.
Meanwhile, New Zealand's agriculture is also considered one of the most developed in the world.
Therefore, researching, breeding, or developing agricultural programs applying high technology toward green and sustainable development is one of the priorities that Can Tho hope the two sides continue to promote.
Secretary of the Can Tho Party Committee also expressed his impression of New Zealand's modern and world-famous education system, attracting a large number of international students from other countries to study, including Vietnam.
Recently, the New Zealand Government has offered many scholarship programs for Vietnamese students.
In the coming time, Can Tho hopes that New Zealand will have more scholarships for civil servants and public employees of Can Tho city.

The diplomat said that responding to climate change and natural disaster risks is one of the pillars of cooperation between New Zealand and Vietnam, adding that the two sides are having good cooperation in education and research among institutes and schools.
New Zealand hopes to connect more deeply with major research centers in Can Tho and will grant scholarships for state officials in areas of English training programs and short-term training programs, which will be rotated depending on the needs and requests of the Vietnamese side.
Statistics from the Can Tho Department of External Relations showed that last year, Can Tho exported US$7.91 million worth of goods, mostly aquatic products, garments, and farm produce, to New Zealand, while importing US$7.6 million worth of products from the country.
