Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son has received Mexican Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs Carmen Moreno Toscano who is in Vietnam for an official visit and to co-chair the two ministries’ political consultation, VNA reported.

At the meeting, Son affirmed that Vietnam always attaches importance to and hopes to further deepen its traditional friendship and fine cooperation with Mexico, towards the establishment of a more suitable partnership framework in the coming time.

He proposed the two ministries speed up delegation exchanges; maintain close cooperation, coordination and support for each other at international ordinations and multilateral forums that both are members to, such as the United Nations and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC); and promote collaboration between Vietnam and the Pacific Alliance (AP), and between Mexico and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Carmen Moreno Toscano stressed that Vietnam is one of Mexico's important political and economic partners in Asia, particularly as both countries are members of the APEC, and the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).

The Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs will continue coordinating closely with its Vietnamese counterpart to concretise orientations and measures to deepen the bilateral ties and bring substantive benefits to the two countries’ peoples.

On the same day, Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Do Hung Viet and the Mexican official co-chaired the seventh political consultation to share information on each country’s situation, agree on measures to strengthen the bilateral relations in the coming time, and exchange views on regional and international issues of mutual concern.

The two sides agreed to continue stepping up bilateral cooperation, especially in economics and trade; bringing into full play advantages of the CPTPP; and perfecting a legal corridor to increase the effectiveness of collaboration activities.

It is necessary to maintain and promote the efficiency of the political consultation mechanism between the two foreign ministries, and the joint committee on economic, trade and investment cooperation; and accelerate negotiations towards the signing of cooperation documents in the fields of diplomacy, finance, agriculture, animal and plant quarantine, education-training, and defence.

After the session, the two sides signed a memorandum of understanding on collaboration in diplomatic training between the two ministries.

Within the framework of her visit, Carmen Moreno Toscano also paid tribute to President Ho Chi Minh at his mausoleum, worked with the Vietnam-Mexico Friendship Parliamentarians’ Group, visited Vietnam Art Museum.

There is no shortage of room for Vietnam and Mexico to promote their commercial cooperation. This month, Vice Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee Nguyen Ho Hai has expressed wish to boost ties between Mexico and Vietnam, and between Mexico and HCM City in particular, stressing that the city always welcomes Mexican delegations and offers all possible support for Mexican enterprises.

During his trip from March 22-27, Hai had the woking sessions with Politburo member of the Mexican Labour Party (PT) and Chairman of the Mexican Chamber of Deputies’ Committee on Foreign Affairs Alfredo Femat Bañuelos; Secretary of Economic Development of Mexico City Fadlala Akabani Hneide; and Director of the Foreign Affairs Division under the Mexican Department of Culture Ariana Aymerich Ordónez.

The Vietnamese delegation also paid a working trip to Guadalajara city, the capital of Jalisto state, during which they held working sessions with local leaders and businesses.

Currently, Mexico is Vietnam's second largest trading partner in Latin America and Vietnam is Mexico's eighth in Asia. The ties have been expanded continuously over the past years, notably after the CPTPP entered into force at the beginning of 2019.

As per statistics of the General Department of Vietnam Customs, in 2022, the nations’ trade turnover topped USD 5.42 billion , up 7% year-on-year, with Vietnam’s export value to Mexico estimated at over USD 4.53 billion.

The trade value between HCM City and Mexico stood at USD 364 million, of which USD 300 million was the value of HCM City's exports.
