Vietnam-Netherlands Friendship and Cooperation Association: Strengthening Economic Cooperation

The Vietnam-Netherlands Friendship and Cooperation Association held the 2nd National Congress, term 2022-2027 on December 21, in Hanoi. The Congress determined that one of the focus of the Association's work in the coming term is to strengthen friendship and cooperation in all fields, especially in economic, trade and investment for mutual benefit between businesses, localities and people of the two countries.

Dinh Thi Minh Huyen, vice president of the Vietnam-Netherlands Friendship and Cooperation Association reported on the successful events between Vietnam and the Netherlands:

"During the first term, the Vietnam-Netherlands Friendship and Cooperation Association organized many activities on peace, solidarity, friendship and people-to-people exchanges; especially activities of practical significance for economic development, serving the interests of the country.

“The Dutch investment projects are small but practical, having an impact on many areas of the economy, with long-term effects. The Netherlands' strengths are in the areas of water management, climate change response, sustainable agriculture, and food security. Those are also important and necessary issues for Vietnam.

Along with investment capital, the Netherlands also shares experience, transfer technology, creative thinking and innovative ways of doing things. They become valuable assets and have long-term use value for Vietnam," Huyen said.

Determining that promoting economic cooperation is one of the key tasks, the Association has successfully introduced and connected Vietnamese businesses and Dutch partners.

They connect organizations and research institutes of the two countries, mobilize experts to support Vietnamese businesses.

Speaking at the Congress, representatives of the Vietnam-Netherlands Friendship and Cooperation Association of some localities shared practical results in the friendship and economic cooperation.

Bui Thanh Giang, standing vice president of the Association in Hai Phong, said that the association has worked closely with the Dutch Embassy in Vietnam, agencies of the Netherlands. They organize the city's program providing experts to support small and medium enterprises.

Kees van Baar, ambassador of the Netherlands to Vietnam, said that people-to-people cooperation between the two countries plays an important role in addition to Party and State diplomacy.

The Dutch government regularly works with businesses, research institutes, and people's representatives of the two countries through civil society organizations in many fields of culture, climate, and agriculture. The participation of the people in the dialogues has facilitated the implementation of the plans in practice.

President of the Viet Nam Union of Friendship Organizations Nguyen Phuong Nga voiced her appreciation of the Vietnam-Netherlands Friendship and Cooperation Association in the past term. These results have contributed to promoting the friendship, solidarity and cooperation between the two peoples of Vietnam and the Netherlands.

President Nguyen Phuong Nga suggested that the Association propose initiatives, develop programs and work plans for the whole term, organize people-to-people activities to expand and develop the network of friends and partners.

She wanted the Association to exploit the potential in cooperation between the two countries in fields such as investment, trade, agriculture, irrigation, water management, education and tourism to innovate the form and content of activities.

She also suggested that the organization should apply information technology to widely inform the Dutch people about Vietnam, the foreign policy, and the country's achievements in protecting and promoting human rights, sovereignty over borders, territories, sea and islands.

The Congress elected the Executive Committee, Standing Committee of the Vietnam-Netherlands Friendship and Cooperation Association for the term 2022-2027.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dao Xuan Hoc continued to be elected as the President of the Association for the term 2022-2027.

On this occasion, President Nguyen Phuong Nga awarded the Certificate of Merit of the Viet Nam Union of Friendship Organizations to 2 groups and 9 individuals of the Association for making many contributions to people-to-people diplomacy activities for the term 2013-2019.

According to a report of the Vietnam-Netherlands Friendship and Cooperation Association: The Netherlands is the second largest trading partner of Vietnam in the European Union (EU), with two-way trade turnover in the first 9 months of 2022 reaching nearly US$8.3 billion.

Cooperation between localities develops smoothly. Up to now, 7 provinces and cities of Vietnam have directly signed cooperation agreements with provinces and cities of the Netherlands. Cooperation in agriculture, defense, security, transportation, and customs is promoted. The Netherlands continues to support Vietnam in the areas of infrastructure, institutional capacity, education-training, water and energy management.
