Vietnam Presents Candidacy for Membership of UN Human Rights Council
Vietnam is a candidate for membership of the United Nations Human Rights Council for the term 2023-2025 with the desire to contribute more effectively to the world's common efforts to promote and protect human rights. |
Vietnam's second candidacy to join the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) shows that Vietnam's development direction and orientation is correct. This is reflected in the policy of the Party and State in formulating development policies on human rights, putting people at the center. The management of the Vietnam's Government is also drastic and effective. Based on the efforts and awareness of the people in following the guidelines of the Party and State, Vietnam has called and mobilized the people to support and comply with the policy, and at the same time bringing benefits to the people, ensuring the legitimate rights of the community.
In particular, the international support shows that Vietnam is on the right track. This is clearly shown through Vietnam's fight against the Covid-19 pandemic. The Government has taken timely and drastic action, considering the protection of people's health and interests the highest priority in all policies and action programs. The international community has praised and recognized Vietnam as a model in the fight against the Covid-19. This result is achieved thanks to the efforts to act on human rights, always putting people at the center in all policies and laws of the Party and State.
In this candidacy, Vietnam is honored to be nominated by ASEAN countries as the candidate of ASEAN. Vietnam also receives a lot of support from friends and international partners. Laos said it would support Vietnam's candidacy for the United Nations Human Rights Council for the term 2023-2025.
Assistant Resident Representative & Head of Governance and Participation at United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Vietnam, Diana Torres said that Vietnam is taking positive steps towards becoming a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council for the term 2023-2025.
According to Torres, Vietnam's presence at the United Nations Human Rights Council will be significant because Vietnam has the opportunity to integrate international obligations and standards into the national legal framework. At the same time, Vietnam will become a country directly participating in promoting human rights efforts at the global level.
Referring to the first time that Vietnam has developed the mid-term report on the implementation of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) third cycle recommendations to submit to the United Nations Human Rights Council, the UNDP representative appreciated this initiative of Vietnam. She said it was an active effort "to show Vietnam's commitment to human rights issues at the international level."

The voluntary midterm report creates more opportunities for Vietnam to become a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council. It shows goodwill, political determination and the right direction in efforts to implement the recommendations - according to Torres.
Kidong Park, UN acting resident coordinator and Terence Jones, UNDP resident representative appreciate Vietnam's commitment and efforts in promoting and protecting human rights. They also affirm the commitment of international partners, agencies and stakeholders to work together to effectively implement the UPR recommendations.
Vietnam has solid foundations for the candidacy for a member of the Human Rights Council for the term 2023-2025 in the context of the changing world situation having a great impact on the guarantee of human rights. Reality has demonstrated the efforts of the entire Party and people in striving to build a State "of the people, by the people, for the people", and participate in the common work of the international community for human rights.
Vietnam's efforts and achievements are the basis for believing that our country will be internationally trusted and elected as a member of the Human Rights Council.
The Human Rights Council is an inter-governmental body within the United Nations system made up of 47 States responsible for the promotion and protection of all human rights around the globe.
