On November 16 (local time), during the 2024 APEC Economic Leaders’ Week in Lima, Peru, President of Vietnam Luong Cuong met with RoK President Yoon Suk Yeol.

During the meeting, both leaders expressed delight at the flourishing Vietnam-RoK relationship, which has reached its best stage ever, particularly following the elevation of bilateral ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

President Luong Cuong reaffirmed Vietnam’s commitment to its relationship with the Republic of Korea (RoK), highlighting that the two nations have become reliable and effective partners across various fields, including politics, economics, trade, culture, and people-to-people exchanges. He conveyed greetings from General Secretary To Lam, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, and National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man to President Yoon Suk Yeol and other RoK leaders.

President Yoon Suk Yeol congratulated President Luong Cuong on his new position, emphasizing RoK's continued view of Vietnam as a key partner in implementing its ASEAN-Korea Solidarity Initiative and Indo-Pacific Strategy.

Future cooperation directions

The two sides agreed to maintain regular delegation exchanges and high-level contacts, promptly share updates on their respective situations, and discuss international and regional issues of mutual interest. They pledged to further enhance economic cooperation, aiming to achieve a balanced bilateral trade target of US$100 billion in the near future and US$150 billion by 2030.

The RoK committed to prioritizing support for Vietnam in several key areas, including training high-quality human resources, establishing research and development centers, transferring technology, and helping Vietnamese enterprises integrate more deeply into the global supply chains of RoK corporations. Additionally, the RoK agreed to provide large-scale ODA with preferential terms to invest in strategic infrastructure projects in transportation, climate change response, green transition, and energy transformation.

Both leaders also agreed to closely cooperate on international and regional issues of shared concern and to continue supporting each other’s candidacies at multilateral forums and international organizations. On the South China Sea issue, they emphasized the importance of maintaining peace, stability, security, safety, and freedom of navigation and overflight. They underscored resolving disputes through peaceful means in accordance with international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

On this occasion, President Luong Cuong extended an invitation to President Yoon Suk Yeol to visit Vietnam and expressed appreciation for President Yoon’s invitation to visit the RoK at an appropriate time. Both sides agreed to arrange these visits through diplomatic channels.
