Vietnam, Singapore holds 13th Political Consultation in virtual form

Speaking at the consultation, Deputy Minister Nguyen Quoc Dung congratulated Singapore on its achievements in controlling the Covid-19 pandemic. The Deputy Minister took this chance to propose to strengthen cooperation in fields that each side held potentials and strengths, towards the dual goals of pandemic overcome and sustainable recovery.

Dung called Singapore to increase investment in areas such as technology application, infrastructure development, logistics, information technology, high-tech agriculture. Vietnam's Deputy Minister highly appreciated Singapore's contribution to maintaining peace and stability in the Bien Dong Sea (South China Sea), promoting a rules-based regional order, demonstrating responsibility and an active role in peace and security building in the area.

On this occasion, Deputy Minister Nguyen Quoc Dung thanked Singapore for its active cooperation in the success of 2020 Year of ASEAN, notably the signing of RCEP Agreement and the adoption of initiatives in response to COVID-19.

For his part, Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs' Permanent Secretary Chee Wee Kiong spoke highly of the two Foreign Ministries' role in the cooperation between the two countries. He stressed that the online organization of the 13th Political Consultation showed the flexibility and determination to maintain flourishing relations between the two Ministries in particular and the two countries in general. Chee suggested that the two sides soon resume flight routes and complete negotiations on priority travel regulations. He took this occasion to congratulate Vietnam's efforts and initiatives as the Chair of ASEAN in 2020 which has witnessed a range of difficulties.

Both leaders affirmed that the Vietnam - Singapore Strategic Partnership had developed deeply and substantially, achieving positive results even in the complicated context of Covid-19. The two discussed specific measures to promote bilateral relations, including strengthening political and diplomatic cohesion through promoting high-level visits and contacts at all levels.

They said in 2021, ASEAN needs to maintain its solidarity and centrality, as well as the momentum of the ASEAN Community building, realize agreed plans and initiatives, and cooperate in the pandemic combat and development recovery. The two sides committed to further joining hands and supporting each other at regional and international forums and organizations such as the United Nations and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum. They committed to work together in the implementation of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) and push ahead with the ratification of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) agreement.

Regarding the complex developments in the Bien Dong Sea, both officials stressed the importance of maintaining peace, stability, security, safety, and freedom of navigation and aviation in the East Sea, and addressing disputes by peaceful measures in line with international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). They also backed the strict and full implementation of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC) and negotiations between ASEAN and China to reach a result-oriented and effective Code of Conduct in the East Sea (COC) in accordance with international law.
