This year at the 12th World Inventory Creativity Olympic (WICO 2023) in South Korea, the Vietnamese team left many impressions with innovative scientific research projects. These are all practical ideas and inventions that meet the new, creative and highly applicable criteria of WICO.

All three teams with eight junior high school Vietnamese students from Giang Vo Junior High School (Hanoi) won gold medals

As a result, Vietnam has won 1 Championship trophy for the best team, 7 Gold Medals and 7 Special Awards awarded by the World Intellectual Property and Invention Association (WIIPA). This is the first year that one of the Vietnamese team won the Championship trophy.

In the first group, Le Tam Trang, Dang Duc Luong, and Nguyen Minh Tuan were awarded the Grand Prix Award, the highest prize of the competition. These high schoolers presented their “Research on a model of heavy metal-contaminated water treatment using filter materials combined with microorganisms in root system” and defeated 26 other countries to come in first place.

The winners in the second group were Nguyen Le Hoang, Tran Gia Khiem, and Vu Hong Phuc who were awarded for their project on “Study on extracting biologically active substances from avocado leaves to make dietary supplements for patients with gastric ulcer caused by Helicobacter pylori".

Meanwhile, student Le Tuan Minh and student Nguyen Bao Vi in the third group were awarded a special prize by Thailand’s Chulalongkom University for their project on “Research on making preparations to treat household plastic waste”.

The project isolated microbial strains from intestines of wax worms that eat plastic to create a preparation for microplastic treatment.
