The heatwave that is sweeping through the northern and central regions is expected to ease next week, with rains in forecast for the north, especially northern midland and mountainous areas, according to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.
However, due to the hot low-pressure area in the west in combination with the foehn effect, the hot weather will persist in northern and central provinces on July 26, sending temperatures from 34-37C, notably 37-38C, even more than 39C in the north central region.
The UV index in Hanoi and central Da Nang city reach levels 7-9, defined as strong, raising the risk of skin damage in direct sunlight.

The heatwave may cause health issues and increase risks of fires and other accidents at residential areas as demand for electricity spikes.
As the hot spell is highly exacerbated by low humidity, there are warnings of fire and explosion hazards, as well as a high risk of forest fire.
As from July 26 evening, the north will begin to experience rains and scattered thunderstorms, particularly the midland northern mountainous localities where the rainfall is set to hit 50-100mm/24h, even over 150mm in some places.
Hanoi weather forecast
Showers and thunderstorms are forecast to hit the capital city in the evening and at night, with temperatures from 29-35C.
Weather forecast for norther western and eastern regions
Rains and thunderstorms are in forecast for the regions, notably torrential rains in northern mountainous provinces (mainly at night and early morning). Tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong winds may occur during thunderstorms.

Flooding in Ha Giang causes human, property losses

At least five people have been killed and two others injured as torrential rains triggered floods and landslides in the northern mountainous province of Ha Giang this week, the provincial steering committee for natural disaster prevention reported.
More than 60 houses were damaged by mudslides, while 2,800 houses were flooded. Floods have submerged six hamlets of Yen Dinh commune and two others in Minh Ngoc commune, Bac Me district, and blocked 33 roads in Ha Giang city. Many cars were sunk into flood water.
Approximately 215 hectares of crops and rice paddies were flooded, while five hectares of forest and 24 hectares of fish farms were destroyed.
Two local hydropower plants, Thuan Hoa and Thai An, had to cease operations after being hit by rockslides.
The provincial steering committee for natural disaster prevention and control, search and rescue estimated that flooding has caused property losses worth over VND 80 billion (USD 3.4 million) to Ha Giang, excluding hydropower damage.
Scenarios in response to natural disasters

The National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said the northern mountainous region will experience unexpected weather patterns in closing months of this year, with the rainfall in September rising 15-30 percent as compared with previous years.
There is a high risk of floods and landslides in northern mountainous provinces, especially the north western area.
Over the past years, the Ministry of Natural Disasters and Environment has put forth a landslide map for 37 provinces. A smaller-scale map has also been designed for about 200 communes prone to landslides, creating the foundation for the establishment of warning stations.
In order to maximize the effectiveness of prevention and control of flash floods and landslides in mountainous areas, experts believe that it is necessary to continue building an automatic real-time natural disaster warning system based on continuous monitoring data.

Such localities as Hoa Binh, Son La, Yen Bai, Lao Cai and Quang Ninh have sought international support to push ahead with technological transfer and the building of natural disaster warning systems.
For the first time, Vietnam has just started the pilot installation of automatic warning system for landslides in Ban Khoang commune, Sa Pa district (Lao Cai).
Experts also suggested reviewing mechanisms and policies in order to deal with issues regarding natural disasters for both short and long terms, and that localities should prepare response scenarios./.
