In response to the Youth Month and the 93rd founding anniversary of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union (March 26, 1931 - 2024), the Youth Union Organization of the Engineering Unit Rotation 2 of Vietnam has conducted many practical activities for local people and young people in Abyei, PANO reported.

Captain Le Huu Khanh, Secretary of the Youth Union Organization of the Vietnamese Engineering Unit Rotation 2, shared that right from the first days of this year, the organization mapped out a concrete plan and actively carried out various activities in completing both regular and unscheduled tasks of the unit. Apart from the key tasks, over the past time, the Youth Union organization has regularly exchanged with young people in Abyei to follow the local situational developments and organize internal meetings to further uphold the creative spirit of youth union members.

During days off, the company’s youths have been divided into different teams to repair and make tables and chairs for schools; help local people grow agricultural crops; and provide fresh water for residential areas, hospitals, and churches, to name but a few.

Attentively, on the first days of March, the organization coordinated with other sections to repair the road in the center of Abyei. It is a route located in a key area with busy traffic and passing through the locality’s important agencies. These deeds contributed to ensuring travel activities for local people, especially in the upcoming rainy season.

The road was put into use only after three days, regardless of the harsh weather conditions and the sudden sandstorms.

Deng Aguer, Head of the Abyei Youth Association, expressed his gratitude to the Vietnamese Engineering Unit and hoped that the company will continue to support the locality in the time to come.

Earlier, on March 22, the Vietnam Army Engineers have organized a discussion on the impact of water quality on people's health, environmental sanitation and pollution, and waste treatment measures in Abyei, according to VNS.

The Abyei Region covers more than 10,000 sq.km of mainly desert and low-lying agricultural land, with distinct dry and rainy seasons. There is no fixed water supply system in the area. During the dry season, most natural ponds and lakes are gradually exhausted.

Ensuring clean water and domestic water sources has been an urgent problem, but is not the only problem for people here.

Since the very first days taking on duty in Abyei, the Vietnamese Army Engineers have implemented many activities to serve the general community, such as supporting the people in building roads and schools, and repairing and constructing boats.

As for clean water and environmental sanitation, the team dredged drainage ditches before the rainy season. The army engineers also dug wells, donated water pumps and provided clean water by tanker trucks twice a week.

These are very meaningful activities for local people, especially in the dry season, when people mainly rely on water from wells dug by the UNISFA or even from puddles.

Talking to local leaders and UNISFA representatives, Colonel Nguyen Viet Hung, Commander of Vietnamese forces participating in UN peacekeeping work at the UNISFA Mission and also Captain of the Vietnam’s Army Engineers, said, "We will continue to coordinate with agencies and units of UNISFA and local authorities to help Abyei people better handle environmental sanitation, protect and exploit water sources to provide for the people."

The discussion is also an opportunity for the Mission to support the Abyei leaders on issues including environmental pollution, education and health, and solutions to deal with them.
