The Ministry of Public Security held a ceremony on October 10 to assign three police officers to join the UN peacekeeping mission in South Sudan, VNA reported.

The three officers are Colonel Le Quoc Huy, Lieutenant Colonel Vu Viet Hung, and Lieutenant Colonel Luong Thi Tra Vinh. They are scheduled to leave Vietnam on October 13 to carry out their new tasks at the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).

At the ceremony, Minister of Public Security To Lam, authorized by the State President, handed over the decisions assigning tasks to the officers. He also presented the ministry’s certificates of merit to them.

Addressing the event, Lam affirmed that the ministry considers sending forces to UN peacekeeping operations an important task in contributing to the realization of the Vietnamese Party’s and State’s commitment to the international community in maintaining an environment of peace, stability, and development in the region and the world, thus improving the country's position and prestige in the international arena.

The ministry has to date had eight officers meeting the requirements for joining the peacekeeping force.

At the ceremony, on behalf of the officers who received the UN peacekeeping mission in South Sudan, Colonel Le Quoc Huy expressed his emotion and deep gratitude for the concern of the leaders of the Party, State and Government, leaders, former leaders of the Ministry of Public Security and related ministries and branches, Project 05 Steering Committee and agencies and units.

On behalf of the three police officers assigned to the task, Colonel Le Quoc Huy promises to the Central Public Security Party Committee and the leaders of the Ministry of Public Security to successfully complete all assigned tasks, continuing the tradition of peace-loving of the Vietnamese people, embellishing the image of Vietnam and the image of the Vietnamese People's Police in the international arena, continuing the heroic and glorious tradition of the People's Police force, contributing to the defense of the Vietnamese Fatherland.

Earlier, President Nguyen Xuan Phuc had presented the President’s decision on sending officers to the UN peacekeeping missions and the Minister of Public Security’s decision on the establishment of the MPS Office for Peacekeeping Operations.

The deployment of personnel to UN peacekeeping operations aims to deliver the State’s commitment to protecting global peace, in line with the “The Vietnamese people’s public security force participates in the UN peacekeeping operations for the 2014-2020 period and following years” project, he said.

He expressed his delight that eight Vietnamese public security officers have met the UN’s requirements. Four of them are to begin working at the UN headquarters and the UN Mission in South Sudan this year.

Amid complicated and uncertain developments in the world in the near future, President Phuc called for joining hands with the international community to seek solutions to traditional and non-traditional security challenges under the flag of the UN.

45 years ago on September 20, Vietnam joined the United Nations, opening a new chapter in its relations with the world and creating conditions for the country to garner international support for its development and increasingly participate and contribute more deeply to global affairs.

The country was admitted to the UN five months after it achieved national reunification following victory in the historic Ho Chi Minh campaign on April 30, 1975. The UN shortly issued a resolution, calling for international support and assistance to be given to the country’s post-war reconstruction and poverty reduction.

From 1977 until the end of the 1980s when Vietnam faced an embargo imposed by the United States, the UN provided the most assistance to the Southeast Asian nation, ranging from overcoming war consequences to reducing poverty and boosting development. In the 1990s, the UN represented one of the leading organizations helping Vietnam to design policies and action programs on economic and legal reforms, as well as supporting its further development and international integration.

In response, the country gradually joined and increasingly promoted its role as part of UN agencies. Since the second half of the 1990s it has participated in a number of leading bodies of the UN, such as the UN Development Program (UNDP), UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and the Human Rights Council.

It has been twice elected as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in both the 2008 - 2009 and 2020 - 2021 periods.
