Vietnamese Shogi Players Show Their Skills at Three-Day Tournament

From May 29 to May 31, the Vietnam Shogi Club organizes the qualifiers with the support of the Vietnam - Japan Friendship Association of Hanoi and the Japanese Embassy in Vietnam.

Earlier this month, nearly 20 players competed in two qualifying rounds in the North region (May 11-12) and the South region (May 19). Eight finalists are Nguyen Xuan Tuan An, Ngo Minh Hieu, Nguyen Thanh An, Nguyen Huu An, Nguyen Van Vu, Duong Bao Thach, Ho Tran Chinh and Duong Anh Vu.
In the Quarterfinals 1 - Winner's Branch, player Nguyen Xuan Tuan An won against player Ngo Minh Hieu after 132 moves.
"I started playing Shogi in 2018 and joined the Shogi Club in Ho Chi Minh City in 2021. To prepare for this tournament, I spend a lot of time practicing every day, and watch the moves from Japanese streamers to learn from them," Nguyen Xuan Tuan An (2nd-year student of Ho Chi Minh CIty University of Technology) shared his thoughts as the first person to enter the semi-finals.

All the matches of the qualifiers will be live-streamed on the official Facebook page of the Vietnam Shogi Club along with commentary sessions from club members. The first three matches on the morning of May 29 attracted about 400 online viewers. The organizing committee believed that the qualifiers will help popularize Shogi as well as the cultural beauty of Japan among Vietnamese people.

On May 30, the tournament continues with 6 matches, including the Semi-finals 1 and 2 - Winner's bracket, the Semi-finals - Loser's bracket, and the Final - Winner's bracket. The final day of the tournament on May 31 will feature the Grand Final between the two best players along with the Award Ceremony and the Closing Ceremony.
Shogi is a traditional Japanese chess game with a history of more than 400 years. The number of Japanese Shogi players is approximately tens of millions. This chess game has been gaining attention from non-Japanese people in recent years. The International Shogi Tournament (IST 2024) is held every 3 years, with the participation of more than 50 countries and territories worldwide. Vietnam Shogi Club was established in 2021 in Hanoi, gathering non-professional individuals from many age groups who share a common interest in Shogi. On May 30, 2023, Vietnam Shogi Club was recognized as a Branch of the Japan Shogi Federation. This year, Vietnam Shogi Club gained another important milestone when becoming a grassroot branch of the Vietnam - Japan Friendship Association in Hanoi on April 16. |
